Working with your hands vs. formal education

Make me a sandwich.

Too long. Not reading it.

Career vs. jobs a la Chris rock.

If you can make a career out of something you love, thats great.
The risk is that it can destroy what you love to do.

edit:link nws for language.

Cant wait to show this to a buddy of mine. He calls himself a head chef but really he cooks cheeseburgers and tacos all day.

I will forgive you for this post, even semi-intelligent people say retarded things sometimes.

good read. But if he enjoyed fixing cars/motorcycles with his hands like he was grown up on, and not wasting money on a phd that is useless now, he would have been happier to begin with.

I enjoy when I hear people say they are going to (insert private school here) for 4 years to become a school teacher. AND they are taking out every loan possible to pay for school

It’s like, congrats, you will graduate in 4 years, have $100k in loans to pay back, and be making $25k per year.
Yeah, make fun of me because I’m at a community college, but when I graduate,I will be making double your pay, and have NO loans to pay off.
:meh:

I’m not mocking education at all… I’m just saying…

I think it’s pathetic that you’re insulting those who want to teach and get the best possible education to do it.

I am by NO means insulting teachers AT ALL, I think teachers should make triple what they do make, but lets face it, it’s one of the worst paying jobs, until you are there for 15+ years.

I’m making fun of the snub people who say “oh, where do you go?, ECC? LOL, I go to canesius(sp?)”

Come to find out, they will be so upside down financially when they graduate though…

What do you plan on doing at ECC?

:grouphug:

ive got a degree in automotive technology but right now, i fix watches. both jobs are hands on but completely different ends of the spectrum.

Is Porn considered working with your hands?

FWIW, I find most people that undermine education sucked at school.

:word:
I have zero loans, I went to community college for 2 semisters didn’t finish but I paid cash when I went. Now I own 2 businesses and work at a bank as a Financial Advisor. Last year I made 3 times what the average family income is here in the Myrtle Beach area :gotme:

My wife graduated with a BS degree, has 19k in student loan debt, looked for a job for 1 1/2 years didn’t get an offer over $10 an hour and now stays at home with our 6 month old.

And no she wasn’t a push through, she had a 3.97 GPA for the 3.5 years it took her to finish her degree.

:thankyou:

:grouphug:

I’m not talking education down at all. I am just glad that I was fortunate enough to find what I loved to do before I blew 10s of thousands on loans. Education is no doubt needed for many jobs. If I have a heart attack and need open heart, I for sure want someone with a PhD.

“the average salary for jobs in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is $24,256”

^ the average family income is $44k

touche

fuck I should have went back to school

“According to government data, the average salary for jobs in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is $24,256, and the median income of households in Myrtle Beach was $35,498.”

median income of households is $35k

meaning slowt4a made ~$70k(so he says).

I was surprised to see how low it was in that area compared to cheektowaga and other places.
