Buy new. Go to United Welding on Freemans Bridge Rd, talk to Bob. I say buy new as you need to get a torch that is going to fit your requirements. Small precise cutting, common burning and torching, Rose bud heating, etc. You don’t want something too small, or too big. Prices are pretty reasonable for complete new kits.
Tanks are better registered and rented. Owning your own tank is nice, but if it goes empty and you need it filled that day it will never happen. Rented tanks you can bring in, pay the require fill fee, and they just give you another tank from stock and take the empty one in it’s place for filling. Tanks are usually registered on a 10 yr lease cheapest. I have 12 tanks here for welding, plasma, compressed air and all of them are rented. Again go to Taylor UnitedW and Talk to Bod. Great guy.
And by gas welder do you mean an oxy flame welding torch, or a GMAW welder(sheilded gas/MIG)?
I think he means Mig when he means gas welder.
But that is useful information as I was looking for an Oxy torch setup myself.
How many general sizes are offered? I only thought there were two types: small and big :lol
Toch size refers to just the physical size of the torch itself. If you’re planning on doin alot of heavy cutting(scrap) then a larger long neck is what you’ll need, however using such a torch for fine cutting of precise parts is not suitable.
Tip size and configuration is what really extends the parameters of any give torch. Just control the size of the flame and kerf of the cut(slag and cleanup in the end).
My oxy torch i use for nothing but heavy cutting. I have my plasma cutters for fine cutting of fabricated parts. plasma cutters though are just substantially more expensive than a typical torch setup.
again, best band for the buck is to go to UW and talk to Bob about a complete package. They have them on hand for viewing and Bob is a great guy. Tell him Adam from R247 Sent you, mention me and my bad habit of buying Speedglass welding hoods all the time :rofl Or if you want to stop down with me we can talk to him together. I have to go there at some point this week for TIG supplies.
Moved to Technical.
I may have to swing by there sometime. I have quite a few questions about the setup I would need and also wanted a ballpark of prices. Been looking for a basic Mig setup for a few months now. I’d swing by with you but I think between our two busy schedules it would be near impossible to match a time, unless its going to be some Sunday.
Doubt I’ll be looking at any precise cutting with an Oxy, just need general brute force to get rid of such things as a pesky LCA, or general heating of bolts.
Vlad was correct, I am looking for a sheilded gas MIG. Just something to get some frame and suspension work done on my truck.
As for a torch setup. I am looking for something mainly for heating and cutting bolts and 1/4" steel plating. I use to deal with Airgas (Northeast welding?) when I worked at Monro muffler. I will definitly have to stop by United this week to check out there setups though.
Thanks for the info!
Both of you would be looking at a medium torch with a number 1-2 tip. Generalized heating and cutting tool right there. Maybe throw in a rose bud head for even heating of larger parts(like if pressing out a bushing from an LCA vlad
Miller, Lincoln, and Thermal arc make good MIGS. Consider what you are going to be welding too. IF you’re planning frame stuff(3/8" plate) you’re going to want something with some ass behind it, minimum of 150-175 amps. With that you’ll be looking at 220. A weld is only as good as the penetration you can get with it into the base metal and a cheapy 110v welder isn’t going to cut the rate above anything thicker than 1/4" plate and even that can be pushing it pending material being welded.
shop around. You can often find KILLER deals online for welding packages, which you’ll want. welder, cart, regulator, gun, etc…you’ll want and NEED it all. Look for something that can handler larger spools and has multiple or variable heat and speed settings. Dont’ settle for a cheap two stage $300 harbor frieght POS. you’ll hate it and regret the purchase soon afterwards.
Yea defintily not picking up anything from Harbor freight, lol. I was leaning towards a Miller MIG. I used them a lot at my old job and they worked well for me.
