01 jetta throwing p0172 code

I have a 01 vw jetta with a 1.8t. my check engine light went on so i went to auto zone and they scanned it and it came back with code p0172. The paper read that bank one was running rich, it diagnosed it by saying a bad cat, maf sensor or fuel injector problem. I went on vwvortex and most people are saying to clean out the maf and check for bad vacuum lines. I was just curious if anyone has had this before and what fixed it? thanks

replace your MAF do not clean it. although im not vary farmilir with 1.8t, MAF is usally my problem on the TDI when I get that code…

I’d put $ on it being the MAF. Replace it don’t clean it like Badnewsmini already said.

a vw with a bad maf? no wai!

you have a brake light out

Few different ways of going about this:

  1. buy a cat, air mass meter and injectors from Autozone and pay about 800-1000 bucks to throw random parts at it

  2. buy a cable and diagnostic software for your car, and do the diagnosis work yourself, and repair/replace the proper part

  3. have a proper diagnosis done at a shop familiar with these types of problems

omfg  :bigclap: +karma

Anyhow, check dubsinthebuff.com to ask for help from someone with a vag-com cable and some knowledge. Or just take it to Bracketracer. I wouldn’t clean the MAF until you’re absolutely sure that it’s causing the problem, lest you fuck up a perfectly good MAF.

Fuel system rich is usually set when the MAF and O2 are out of range of each other as the computer looks at both signals as a checks and balance for fuel delivery when one is out of wack due to unmetered fuel or air entering the system this code gets set (rich for fuel/ lean for air)

Check the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator and also check for any other vacuum lines or connections post maf…also check the air filter, if it is excessively dirty get in the ZoNe auto zone :stuck_out_tongue:

If nothing checks out then go see Jason at blackforest.

thanks guys, my neighbor has his own shop and i can always go there if i need something but i usually like to do stuff on my own since it is obviously cheaper. I will look for hoses tomorow and if i find nothing i will probably have my neighbor look at the maf

you need to get a VAG COM cable…those code readers are a shot in the dark compared to a VAG COM cable. otherwise take it to BracketRacer.

i will post on vdubs soon, but does anyone have a vag com on here? im gonna go take a look for leaking hoses now

just take it to bracketracer. best private mechanic for VW’s around here. most of the guys on DITB don’t read here too often. sign up on there and post a case of beer for a vac com scan and i’m sure someone will do it for you if you don’t want to go to a shop.

+1

all the scanners in the world wont tell you shit without a vag-com cable …

my moneys on maf…

actually i took off the covers of the motor felt for broken vacuum lines disconnected the maf and wiped everything down (didnt touch actuall sensor) cleaned the plug for the maf and it went off  im hoping it was just dirty
