wow…thanks alot man, i appreciate that…i mean im pretty much open to anything, but i just love the old hondas for some reason…and since its my first bike i thought a 350 would suit me…and this is along the lines of what im lookin for in terms of older hondas
http://ithaca.craigslist.org/mcy/981077079.html
you think that the head on the bike im lookin at is really shot?..is it possible at all to drill and re-tap safely…i mean that is if the guy goes down in price more…i just love everything else about the bike
you will be fine to re-drill and re-tap if your careful not to penetrate too deep. however, once you do that…be careful to pay attention to overheating
ic ic…im just wondering if i should tackle it…being my first bike and all…i mean im use to doing head swaps and replacing trannys on civic…as well as everything else…i never take my car to the mechanic unless its a clutch or fuel line…im pretty confident i could do it, just want it to be reliable and safe after i do…and i was just wondering whats the max i should pay for a bike with this problem?..and again thanks alot for the input man, you’ve ben very helpful!
No more than 100 bucks. Just me though. Honestly if the head warped to the point of tearing out the header bolts you could have a whole mess of problems.
Air cooled motors will almost never overheat at idle. The only time they possibly would is if they are starved of oil, or if the owner revved the piss out of it for a minute or two while the bike was just sitting there. With that said I would pick it with the thought that its a roller, and consider swapping out a replacement motor as opposed to messing with the current one. You could also tear into the current motor and see whats what but with parts being scarce and you possibly looking at a total overhaul the initial purchase price should be pretty low. Know what i mean?
You meet the nicest people on a honda.
^lol
Hondas new ad slogan
I realy hope so. I have 2 honda bikes. Thats 2X’s as many nice people.
to the O.P.
you can get a replacement engine on Ebay for about $100-200 shipped to your door.
I really would have to look at this bike in person to know if its worth re-tapping the header bolts and calling it a day. it needs to be compression and leakdown tested, oil needs to be looked at, plugs will tell alot about how the motor is running and such.
and for the cost of getting a gasket set, tearing down the original motor, and cleaning the living hell out of EVERYTHING and re-assembling…you could have just swapped the motor and been riding
ok ic…since this would be my first bike, id rather just swap the motor…but then again, i dunno if this dude would drop that low in price, i think he really believes he’s gonna get some money out of the bike…probably better off just lookin elsewhere huh?
dude, call honda today and tell em this…lol
yea, even if i could retapp em i would be kinda nervous bc something was obviously causing the over heating…the guy did say it was his first bike…i would really like to score a bike that was mechanically sound, maybe even with cosmetic flaws like paint/upholstery or whatever…thank you very much everyone for the help and info…suppose i’ll look around a bit more unless this guy miraculously gives it to me crazy cheap
^^^^NAh i was exajewrating(intentionally misspelled for the NYspeed spelling police). But i do think that 1k is definitely a high price for what it is. The most i would offer him would be 500, and thats on a good day. i dunno if all the numbers on the motor are fine I guess its a good deal, but with overheating like that you just never know what else it needs.
you could always pull the head and run pipe cleaners through the oil passages and such…If you decide not to buy, I would like to look at it lol.
ic ic…yeah ill definitely keep ya posted, thanks for that info…if he drops enough in price i might take it, if not ill let ya know right away, its in his garage and not going anywhere at the moment…i would like to get it even with a problem like that bc i think it will help me learn alot about those motors and just motorcycle engines in general
