1981 XS650 Bobber Build

Picked the bike up for $400 at the beginning of the summer. Had every intention of chopping the hell out of the bike though so i never rode it all summer.

The guy was going cafe style with it, and had an absolutely mint xs650 in his garage. The bike didn’t run when I picked it up, but the kick start moved freely so I had faith. I couldn’t bring myself to tell him my plans for the bike, even when he questioned why i loaded it on the trailer before even sitting on it.

So the project began…
Stripped it all down and hacked the soft tail off, threw some drag bars I had laying around on too…

Hard tail came in the mail about a week later, very nice piece. So I sprayed the stock wheels black and mocked it up just to get an idea of what it would look like.

I rebuilt the dual carbs, sprayed them black, started polishing the float bowl covers and used pod filters.

Sprayed the motor all black, polished the fins on the heads, and mounted up the carbs.

Finally got around to slugging/welding the frame.

I put the motor in, rigged up a funnel for a gas tank, and fired her up…it was only running on one cylinder mainly because one carb was still sticking.

Mocked it up with the stock gas tank…didn’t fit for shit with the new hardtail section.

Shortly after I got a sweet deal on an old Harley Superglide tank, zero rust and a brand new petcock, so I threw that on there to see what it looked like.

Then on went the solo seat…

As it sits now, it runs great. I’ve done a few burnouts with it parked up against the house lol. Still needs some finishing touches like welding some brackets on. I need to head down to the owego area and pick up a front brake master cylinder and caliper. After that it’s just powdercoat and paint and it’s ready to go.

Cool

really like this build

Cool build. Good luck.

I expect to see this thing out and about alot next summer

i didnt read it at first. all i kept thinking was damn this things needs brakes… I hope it runs great, but it better be able to stop.

Very nice!

Idk if it’s possible this next summer but next winter i’m really tossing around the idea of a bike build like this

I know it needs brakes. The rear is a drum, and just needs the brake stay bracket welded on…then it will be set. Got the linkages and everything run out. The front the master cylinder and caliper are shot. Tried switching out the brake fluid and the shit that came out looked like chocolate milk, and the new stuff ate away all the gaskets really fast.

I did ride it up my street with no brakes…I HAD TOO! Hit second gear and pulled a little wheelie then threw my feet down flintstone style to slow my ass down.

It will be out and about this summer Jimmy. The spec is gunna be straight winter beater/rainy day car. I want to get on another rocket too, probably a gsxr750.

motox23, these builds are fun and relatively easy. The XS is a great platform with a lot of resources out there, so are the Honda CB series. Even the Kawi KZ’s have some decent info out there. Just make sure you have access to used parts, and a welder and you’ll be set!

Nice build man. Looking at a 73CB750 for my build just not sure which way to go with it. Was thinking of something like this http://www.hotbikeweb.com/features/0905_hbkp_death_or_glory_custom/photo_08.html

But less flashy, or just a straight up bobber. Still up in the air but I will figure it out.

nice

like the new tank

The only thing with the CB is the inline 4cyl which is powerful but is a VERY wide motor. Which can make doing certain things tough. But there is a wide array of information on all the CB series bikes.

I will probably build another bike like this for myself when i get a job.:frowning:

good luck and looks great so far.

^^ hey on a good note i finished the whole front end of the 74 bobber^^ took it all off and refinished everything and still had time to take it out a couple times. Your always welcome for a cruise when i take my r6 out.

very cool

Hope you got around to rebuilding that front caliper.

(blk05spec)The 750 is a wide motor but Ill work around it. Just trying to figure out how Im going to build the frame. I really like that low slung look.

My next build will be a drop seat, so that the rear tire (probably go really wide) would be half way up my back lol. Crazy but It looks badass.

Drop seat will give you a low slung look, then if you want to extend the chassis out a bit more and stray away from the bobber look you can alter the neck and downtubes.

You would getting more into the “pro street” look.

XS650, Custom Dropseat, R6 Front Forks/clip ons, Harley f&r rims, and a fat tire(250+)…thats my dream build. Wierd that I love harleys so much, but building them is expensive and I’ve become pretty addicted to the XS because of it’s simplicity.
