another cafe build... 82 xs650

So to add to the list of current cafe builds here is what i have been working on slowly over the past 7 months.

Here is what I started with…

I bought the bike for a couple hundred bucks last summer and was told all it needed was a valve adjustment. It turned out that it needed an entire top end rebuild. I replaced the jugs and pistons, and all the top end gaskets and seals. I also rebuild the carbs and replaced the brushes on the charging system, a weak charge was allowing the bike to idle perfect but it would not rev over 3k.

Before it went back in…

Now that it was running I started on a few other things
-getting an 18in rear wheels
-new gold o-ring chain
-xs750 tank
-clubman bars
-k&n pod filters
-cafe seat from hotwingglass.com (this included chopping/reworking the rear portion of the frame)
-triumph thruxton rear shocks (a LOT taller than the factory parts, the center stand no longer lifts the rear wheel off the ground)
-custom battery tray under seat
-building my own wiring harness

this is what it looks like currently…

also got a tail light off a cbr100rr w/integrated signals that after taking a bit off the tail section is going to work great…

plans are to get it wired back up and ride it a bit to make sure things are mechanically sound then take it apart again and get everything cleaned up, painted/powder coated and replace things like swing arm bushings, steering head bearings, progressive springs in the front, upgraded front disc/caliper and rearsets.

I like it! Get some more pictures!!

thanks, i need to get better with taking pictures.

i have a 2nd xs650 that i will be turning into a bobber once this gets going a bit more, that is a real rats nest though, got it for $100.

YES! Fucking awesome!!

650 love! That’s a xs750 tank right? Oh and can I buy the petcocks from your 650 tank? I need them bad!

yes to xs750 tank. it is not a direct swap on, the front mounts the opposite way the 650 tank mounts, so that required some cutting an welding.

the petcock from my 650 tank leaks.

just buy a rebuild kit from mikesxs? or a new petcock, thats what i did.

and i saw your going to use a tank to build your tail section but just an fyi, the one i bought from hotwingglass was only $105 shipped.

Mikes doesn’t have a rebuild kit for vacuum petcock anymore. They also don’t have any petcocks instock that I can use. They only sell the non vacuum replacement that isn’t in stock. Also the tank I bought requires 2 petcocks and I’m down one. Nick ( focusinprogress) and I are going to fab up a universal manual petcock and block for the other side.

And as for the seat I am going with more of a brat style seat without the hump for now. I have 2 tanks Nd if I decide to make one nick has already made one so he knows what he is doing… I think lol
