1QIK Tranny (not vestite)

A little change in plans. Found a used setup for $130.00 + shipping. About the same miles as mine now. Think I still want to rebuild the one I got apart though. I’d like to learn how to do this.

you should have come to louis, free hotdogs were had for everyone.

also we should dip the case in carbon fiber

Thanks a lot! It did take 3 (well, 2.5 haha) to do but its shifting perfect and I’m glad I went that route instead of paying someone. I know way more on the inside workings of the tranny and I love that fact.

Once i got into it, and looked at it, it seems like a very simple concept. if your curious or want some help/insight let me know…I’d love to do this again or help someone else with it.

Wish I coulda stopped. Always love free dogs but was golfin up the road and had to get home to get a few things done. Will pm Hortanica to see if he’d be willing to take a look at what I got goin on.

Is that a FS5R30A tranny? Looks like they put these in a bunch of vehicles I’m surprised there isn’t more aftermarket for them.

Yes, I believe you are correct. I also believe these were installed at least in Nissan Pathfinders, possibly others.

Da parts is in, da tools is boughten, the case is cracked open, let the carnage begin.

da* case is cracked open

Nice

Nice. I will tell you that when you take the gear stacks apart it gets REALLY messy. Good luck. I’ve pulled apart several nissan transmissions and 2 subaru transmissions… they’re really not very confusing, you just need to be meticulous. Do you have the factory service manual for the car? The transmission rebuild and teardown is in there, pretty detailed, too. LMK if you need any help.

Made some progress. Went and bought about every three jaw puller made and now know two jaw is the way to go. Some three jaws worked and had to use the bearing splitter in some cases. Definitely a study in geometry, physics and patience. Got one more gear to pull and have to have the two jaw. Borrowing one tomorrow. Then comes the pressing. Harbor Freight is out of the press I need so going to have to wait. Have the shop manual and it seems mildly helpful. Seems like gears / bearings can only come off one way anyhow. Keep you in mind Newman during reassembly. May ask your input before assembly so I get it right. Definitelyy don’t want to do it over.

Fry daddy from Salvation Army with gear lube to heat gears, upside down dust off can on shaft… I’ve put audi transmissions together without a press.

Interesting. May have to try this. Can make grilled cheese too.

Forgot to mention. The press is required now to remove the remaining bearings and gears and also the shaft from the housing. I may try the heat trick upon reinstall. Could a LIGHT / even heating with a plumbing torch offer the same effect?

Looks like progress!

Press came in yesterday from Summit. Harbor Freight could only tell me to keep calling back until I got lucky with their delivery truck. Should be able to press the shafts out soon and start replacing what items need replaced.

OK, maybe this isn’t going as quickly as I had hoped, or as the thread title suggests. Lack of time during my busy season has made things drag out. As far as the tear down, I don’t think it was that bad. As the shafts were pressed off I ended up with a lot quicker dis-assembly than I had hope so some parts got out of location.

As of today, managed to press out the main and counter shaft and now have a pretty good pile of gears and parts spread about the work bench. If anyone wants to offer some suggestions (or drink all the bear they can handle for hands on re-assembly) it would be appreciated. I’m planning on beginning the reconstruction over the next couple weeks or so. One question for Spam16v on the Fry Daddy idea. I wasn’t able to locate a fryer but I do have my old barbeque grill at the shop now. Do you think a pan of oil on the grill will yield the temps I need for the trick you mentioned?

Oh yeah, Bendpak XPR-10 two post lift ordered today. 7-10 days.

Flash point of the oil would be the issue with open flames. Salvation Army, do work. Basket makes it easy to extract the gears and drain briefly. Some people love that method, others hate it. Tap tap with an aluminum pipe and the gears pop onto the shaft like cake.

I was gonna use my wife’s crock pot…then give it back to her. Couldn’t hurt her cooking.

Ouch!
