I have a 2001 BMW 540i with the M Sport package that I am being pressured to part with.

Options that this includes are:
Heated Seats
Power Moon Roof
All automatic windows
Dual power seats / Steering wheel with memory
///M Seats, steering wheel and shifter
17” ///M Wheels (not sure what style #). I just replaced all 5 tires on the vehicle in July (full sized spare).
New Battery in February.

Interior is great. There is no rips or tears and only minimal wear on the leather. Basically the drivers seat has rub wear on the bolster. Dash is not cracked and is in perfect condition and the carpets are great. One of the mats is missing the velcro backing.

This car has been great aside from a few issues that I have aired out on the board.

Based on that thread I got several new parts:

New Plugs
New Coils/ Boots
New CCV Valve (and all attached hoses)

Low and behold this failed to fix the issue and after giving them a write up and a video from Jason at Black Forest they agreed to take his recommendation and replace the motor.

New (used) Motor.
New Clutch & Flywheel

We ordered a comparable motor, upon inspection it was no good. He finally caved in and got me a motor with about 73K on the clock. I have added about 2K since having it installed. This motor has been nothing but strong and reliable. I have had ZERO motor issues since the swap.
Here is the thread for the motor swap:

They did crack my radiator tank in the motor replacement process; I will have it replaced before selling so this is a non issue. I have checked the level every other day so the car has not been overheated at all due to this.

Current Known Issues:
Brake wear sensor is on. I will be replacing the brakes before selling unless someone buys it in the next 5-10 days and asks me not to.

There is one missing button and a couple of loose buttons on the hvac controls. This is a common issue and the buttons are readily available online.

Both sides of the car have a line of dings in the door. It almost looks like someone shot a bb gun at it or something. It is not a horrible thing but it could use a good smoothing.

The dash has the common dead pixel syndrome. It is not as bad as most and the mid is good, but there are dead spots and it is hard to read. I found no justification to spend $250 on a fix that is only guaranteed for 1 year.

The rear sunshade tabs are broken. The motor still works so all that needs to be replaced is two little plastic tabs on the control arms. I didn’t care enough to deal with it and I can’t imagine that you will either. Rip it out and call it weight reduction.

That is as much information as I can come up with. Ask any questions you like and I will do my best to answer. I love this car, but sadly it is not practical for me at the moment.
I do have one offer, but it is contingent so I am posting this but I will not under cut him or play price is right with a $1 more bid.

heh, ironic that we both put our cars up for sale the same day…

really hope that mine sells fast so that I can pick this up.

I was “asked” to do it last week… I procrastinated. I really do love this car.

haha. i feel your pain. my better half has been “asking” me to get something more comfy and quiet for about a year now.

hope to work this out soon

What the hell… everyone is selling their cars!

I love these! I almost bought one a few months back… GLWS

fuuu im buyin one of these soon, glws

I am getting an SUV for the winter, and hopefully something even more fun once summer rolls back through.

So buy this one :gotme:
It would be a great winter car while your M5 sleeps in a garage warm and dry.

I had a 98, my dad currently has a 99, these things are a blast, and get 27+mpg on highway trips. You’ve got me thinking about getting another one!

I got 26 MPG on my last trip to Syracuse. Average around 18-20 as I dont use it for much more than my daily commute from South Buffalo to Cheektowaga.

this is not an M-sport. it would have M style bumpers and black trim IIRC

It does have black trim… on black paint. I also doubt that someone would have gone so far as to change the wheels, steering wheel, shift knob, door trim, door sills, and suspension which are all indicative of the M Sport package.

Also that car that you pictured has been modified as those are M5 wheels and the exhaust is visible. The exhaust leads me to believe that the bumper has been replaced as well.

edit, we are both right:

in 2000 the sport package got renamed m-sport. in 2003 the m-sport included a lot more cool stuff like the one I pictured (m-technic bumpers, m-wheels, etc)

Mike I am not an expert so this could be wrong but have owned a few E39s(wish I still did) and it looks like you have the sport package which is different from the M-sport package.

Anyhow this car rules and I LOVE E39s so much its siqqqqqqqqqqqqqq.

It is ok, I am sure that it is M Sport, see the post above yours. Silly BMW and switching out names and options for different years. I do wish that this was a 2003, I would not be getting rid of it. Well, yes I would. If it was a 2003 M5 I would not be getting rid of it.

Drew, You know that you want this to cruise around in for winter. I am sure that you still have some fun parts laying around and can not resist.

Yeah I should heave read that first. I knew it was a certain year they got the bumpers and such. I recently grabbed a 09 forester xt which pwns snow! This will be dope as hell for someone though.

The 03s look very much like M5s, basically the wheels, exhaust and mirrors would give it away, the front bumper is very close, just different fog lights IIRC.

i know i know…it’s out of my budget right now otherwise i would :frowning: car looks great, im looking at lesser nice examples for the winter.
