the spread offense is goin to start effecting the NFL. pro passers will be hard to come by and there won’t be enough decent QB’s to fill the position. the Pat Whites of the world aren’t goin to be QB’s in the NFL. And since your defenses will be built to stop the spread a team with a power running game and a average at best QB (sorta like the 90’s steelers) will be about to succeed in the NFL as those players make their way into the draft. Levon Kirkland would never have been on the field in a defense built to stop the spread. They will develop less and less of those style guys thus improving the chance to win with a power ground attack.
back to the BCS… i hate a play-off and i hate the current… i want the traditional… I’ll use the 83 hurricanes as my example… they went into the bowl game as #5 playing the #1 team (nebraska). #2 texas lost in the cotton bowl… #4 Illinois was blown bout in the rose. # 3 auburn barely beat michigan in the sugar bowl. Miami beat #1 so they jumped from 5 to #1 in the final rankings. its gives you a chance to get in even if you arent #1 or #2.
but then again in 1993 they failed. #1 FSU beat #2 Nebraska in the orange but fsu got into the game with a loss when #3 WVU was undefeated and beat BC who beat #1 ND who a week prior beat #1 FSU… also auburn finished undefeated but was on probation. WVU ended up gettin smoked by florida. #4 ND beat #7 in the cotton bowl… ND finished #2 to FSU’s #1… i dont understand how you could beat a team head to head and finish with the same record and not finish as atleast co-champions. if anything WVU should have got a shot to play nebraska and FSU and ND should have rematched.
1994 was a failure when PSU and Nebraska both finished undefeated and nebraska ended up #1 and PSU #2.
in 1990 and in 1991 there were split champions. in 1991 miami and washington split when they both finished undefeated. in 1990 colorado and Georgia tech split even though colorado had a loss and GT was undefeated… both teams also had a tie. I’d have to say 1990 was one of the most exciting seasons ever…If not for the famous “5th down”(colorado-mizzou) and susequently the clip call on ND in the orange bowl GT probably wins outright…a play-off system doesnt leave much anticipation in the air about the other bowl games…neither does the current system. under the current system the bowl games dont mean. a play-off and the BCS closes the box too early and takes the excitement out of new years day. a voter poll leaves it all open to chance. College football is about rivialries and contraversy and lack of structure… thats what makes it…MADE IT it great… the bowl alliance and then the BCS ruined a perfectly flawed system of human polls. If i want playoffs i’ll watch the pros…if i want a tourney i’ll watch basketball.
i also think strenght of schedule is one of the most overated things ever. especially considering the way the big east is looked at… in comparison the acc and big 10 are as bad of not worse top to bottom than the big east… Upsets happen more so in D1 than ever. what if ND knocks off USC…what does that say about Cuse…they will have beat ND who lost to pitt but beat usc who lost to oregon state who lost to psu who lost to iowa who lost to pitt who lost to rutgers who beat cuse. i could go on forever…their is so much parody its rediculous…what about if ND beats USC who smoked OSU who beat michigan who lost to ND who lost to pitt who beat iowa who beat PSU who beat ND who beat navy who lost to pitt who lost to cincy who lost to oklahoma who lost to texas who lost to texas tech who lost to oklahoma who beat nebraska who lost to virginia tech who lost to miami who lost to FSU who beat colorado who beat WVU who beat Uconn who beat cincy who beat USF who lost to Pitt who lost to bowling green who plays toledo who beat michigan who lost minnesota who beat bowling green who lost to boise state who BEAT EVERYONE THEY PLAYED so far!!! utah and boise state need some respect because the NCAA isnt the 7 degrees of kevin bacon, you are seperated from just about any team by one or two degrees.
