I was north of Barrie yesterday and they got hammered
Second this. Been there done that, not exactly fun.
Got caught in a squall somewhere between Fulton and Oswego last year. Sounds ridiculous but it was snowing in inches per minute. I’ve never experienced anything like it. There were four of us and you couldn’t see headlights or tail lights from 5 feet away. We stopped for a minute to check the GPS and the sleds were white. I had a general idea of where we were but we ended up hanging out by a road for little bit and waiting it out. Afterwards as you can imagine there was a lot of new fluff on the trails covering up hidden water holes. I was leading, hit one and promptly got handlebars to the nuts lol.
anyone been out to Old Forge in past couple years? Going in a few weeks with my father for the weekend to break in his new sled. Just wondering what to look for/avoid. Thanks guys.
Not sure if anything was open last night but there were sled tracks on the trail in springville where it crosses Peters rd at the 219 ramp around 9:30pm last night. There were no tracks when I went through earlier around 4:30pm.
For those who have not been out west…
Can confirm, we have a 14’ base right now…and that’s measuring at a conservative spot… this winter has been off the hook.
Where exactly are we talking “out west”? This sounds fun… Have truck and trailer, will travel.
I really doubt the sled you have for running around WNY will work in the snow they have out there. That’s the land of 155+ tracks with 3" paddles. A long track around here is a 137 with 1.75" lugs. That sled would just bury itself out west.
^^what he said. I personally have a 163" track with 2.6" lugs… the 3" is too tall for my liking, as they fold over more in the heavier snow. Many guys run 174" tracks…and lugs 3-3.5".
Also, I live in Bellingham,WA. I usually ride the Mt Baker national forest area…Mt Baker holds the record for snowfall in one year of 1,140" of snow. I also ride north of here too, in Whistler/Squamish/Pemberton…which, is like riding in a post card.
A 121" wouldn’t even make it up some of the trails here, MINIMUM to play off trail is 144" but even then, you’re gonna spend most of your time digging out… Majority of guys run 155" & 163"
Also, you need a avy beacon, probe, shovel… and ideally an avy bag.
Got some local riding in on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. A little over 350 miles total. Friday and Saturday were terrible. Sunday and Monday were surprisingly good.
Yeah I understand that my 137 wouldn’t work out at all over there… But I’d still love to try that kind of riding one day. Looks amazing and fun.
I just figured with the “have truck and trailer, will travel” that was your plan
best bet for east coasters is fly out and rent… theres a bunch of sled rental places, that will rent u the sled and all the gear. RideWhistler is really great, and they guide, too!
Well our local season seems to be shaping up quite well.
We drove up 81 between Syracuse and Watertown last night and didn’t see much snow. Guess there is still some riding if you get up on the hill but I doubt it’s great.
Couple friends headed to the hill yesterday. I gonna guess one of them will be bringing me a broken sled tomorrow afternoon. It’s like a tradition.
Been out 19 times now…
The ski hill near me has 160" base. Been sunny the past few days so the snow has set up pretty good, but still can find deep fresh stuff if you know where to look.

Hygear fucked up my order so it can stay 40* as far as I care.
Southwest has plenty of cheap flights out west.
You have the right idea with the wheels.
