The mayor of Miami was on the news last night basically saying, “Our tap water is still perfectly fine you idiots, just fill up some containers at home!”
Right? This boggles my mind.
no
WATER-BOTTLING
I don’t get it.
Some good news/bad news developments overnight.
Good news it made landfall fall on Cuba and that knocked it down to a cat 3 with 125mph winds.
Bad news its now looking like it will go up the gulf just offshore Florida’s west coast then go ashore somewhere between Fort Myers and Tampa, which is the worst case scenario for storm surge flooding. And it’s expected to quickly strengthen once it moves off Cuba and over the 90 degree gulf waters.
yeah seems like having it stay in warm water up the gulf coast all the way to Fort Myers is much worse than had it hit the everglades and weakened.
maybe it will keep veering west and miss the mainland but that might just make is stronger.
Key West is going to be messed up

what sources are you guys using to get the latest info?
i gotta give credit to CNN for solid coverage of this with their radar and various graphics.
the CNN of old.
also following a few storm chasers on FB and twitter for on the ground stuff.
been watching some of these cameras until they get knocked offline:
reddit seems to be the best source for up to the minute information on Irma: https://www.reddit.com/live/zkadef2ttzql/
this guy is pretty silly:
I was waiting for some debris to nail that guy…^
It was odd to see manatees laying on the ground where the water was pulled away by the storm. I am wondering if they will be washed ashore as the water rushes back in.
Once things have settled and they go back and talk about why the damage wasn’t as bad as initially predicted it’s going to come down to these two unexpected shifts to the east.
Those put the storm over land and saved much of the Florida’s west coast from devastating storm surge flooding. The storm surge prediction at my friend’s condo in Fort Myers went from 9’ to 1’ after this shift.
hard to say whether they dodged a bullet or if the hype was overplayed.
hard to articulate but you kind of need the actual storm to match the hype or people just ignore the warnings and evac orders. Obviously hundreds of thousands of people ignored the evac orders this time around too.
there are videos out there of guys fishing and kite-boarding in the ocean yesterday when the newscasters are trying to discuss the severity of the storm.

or maybe that is just what communism looks like?
“I’m standing here reporting live in my light windbreaker and my hair is barely even being blown around but fuck this guy windsurfing because he’s the reason people are going to think the storm isn’t that bad”.
No, you’re both showing people. The difference is you’re reaching millions of people because you have a camera and a national audience.
Naples got hit hard with wind. I saw a 140+ mph gust was recorded there so bye bye trailer parks. Anything built to full hurricane code should be ok though. The biggest concern for widespread damage/death is never wind though, it’s the flooding, and because it tracked inland that was far less than anticipated when the storm was supposed to follow the coast until past Tampa.
lol:
25% of structures in the Keys are destroyed… 65% have significant damage.
crazy.
Here’s what I don’t get… Supposedly foundation depth regulations are in place to the depth that takes care of the outliers and extremes, not because frost levels are that deep all the time…
When you are the civilization that settled this land less than 300 years ago, built megacities on its shores for the first time in the billions of years of existence , shouldn’t you kind of expect that some day in the future a storm will hit that destroys everything?
Every storm we see now is labeled as the product of climate change… That kind of thinking just ridicules science. Its beyond illogical. Add to that the fact that there could easily be stuff like this going on before but there were no smart phones, drones or youtube to sensationalize everything the moment it happens. There would be something going on in California but people in New York would never even hear about it.
Or statements like “hundreds of billions of dollars on damages from Harvey and you want to tell the people there climate change isn’t real?”… Well let’s see… What was there in Houston even 100 years ago? Lets say 100 years ago a hurricane passed through 2x worse than Harvey, even adjusted for inflation, do you think it would come even close to the damage done now? Now go back 200, 300, 1000 years.
Same goes for forest fires etc
any of you guys know any contacts at insurers that need independent adjusters for Harvey or Irma?
I’ve got a crew of bilingual (Eng/Span) IA’s that are wanting to do down there.
