It has significantly wider front tires than my C6 corvette has on the rear. Not to knock the strategy, and I’d trade in a second, but still.
Maybe you should check and see what new cars cost
Silverados are 40-60k
Yeah and Chevy knocks 20% off their trucks because that is all they are worth. lol
I’m well aware what cars cost. I still think $70k for a Camaro, any Camaro, is pretty nuts. Regardless of it’s ring lap time. It’s a niche car that they’ll sell to a niche market though.
Brakes are good for 4-5 laps on a 3.0 mile circuit:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d rather have the V6 1LE and spend the difference in money actually going to a track and consumables instead of talking about what a more experienced driver can do with my car.
But no one is going to ride your sack when you stand next to a V6 Maro at Cars and Coffee.
That would imply that I would want to go to Cars and Coffee.
I would rather do stuff like put down better auto-X times than my buddy with a 2016 SS, or better laps times than a 2014 1LE at Nelson with a car that weighs almost just as much, with half the HP, and 1/4th the cost. (to be fair I did beat myself when driving those Camaros)
“It’s not how you race your car, it’s how you stand next to your car.” -Some really shitty alternate reality Toretto from Fast & Furious.
PS… I assume you know I’m just being a dick because I too would much rather go drive a V6 Camaro on a track than stand next to a $70k Camaro in a parking lot.
It doesn’t seem like the quote function is working for me anymore…
If all it takes is tires and power, why isn’t everyone doing it? Its so simple! TBH the 1LE is a great package.
The V6 camaro in 1LE would be a riot. The V6 is really nice and sounds pretty good too!
Comment on the price from Jay… search for used 1LE’s, they hold their value pretty well, same with the Z28’s.
New cars are expensive, all domestics are on par with each other. Dodge /Ford /Chevy they are all the same. $70K for the now top dog Camaro doesn’t seem that crazy to me. A base C Class MB starts at $40K and they suck. A base Cayman is $55K and will drop 50% in value in 2 years. Camaro does better than that.
I know you’re a lot more experienced than most of us (in terms of driving skill). And I know that the Ring is not most tracks… But man, after watching that video, I don’t think I would EVER feel comfortable with a car that powerful, in a road course situation. I think if I was actually planning on using the car for road course driving or anything, the v6 would be a much better/safer idea being a much more manageable power range or whatever.
I think with enough experience anyone could “handle” the ZL1, and that experience is attainable. Are they going to be going 10/10ths the first time out, no.
I drove a last gen 1LE at a track for a few laps, not my car and I was ok at a safe 8/10ths drive within 2 laps.
But I think that ZL1 at a safe 8/10ths drive (say 5-10 track days experience) > V6 1LE at full boil. It’s just that if someone were going to be seriously tracking the car ~10 times a year that consumables like brakes and tires will add up, where as a less powerful car with a similar chassis will be a lot more wallet friendly.
I don’t know how it all adds up; sub 7:45 = experience, sub 7:30 = skill, sub 7:20 = bravery?
Since I can’t relate to ring times I converted times to average miles per hour:
Integra Type R 88.8 mph 8:43
Nissan 350Z 91.8 mph 8:26
Civic Type R 100.1 mph 7:43.8
BMW M4 GTS 103.7 mph 7:27.8
Camaro ZL1 106.5 mph 7:16.04
I then took the MPH and converted that back to lap times at Nelson Ledges:
Hypothetical Integra Type R 1’:21
Hypothetical 350Z 1’:18.5
Hypothetical Civic Type R 1’:12
Hypothetical BMW M4 GTS 1’:09.5
Hypothetical ZL1 1LE 1’:07.5
I took some historic lap records from the Glen and on average they are 5 MPH slower than Nelson. So 5 MPH slower than the ring average:
Hypothetical Integra Type R 2’:22
Hypothetical 350Z 2’:18
Hypothetical Civic Type R 2’:08
Hypothetical BMW M4 GTS 2’:04
Hypothetical ZL1 1LE 2’:01
As a check I’m saying that the ZL1 > SCCA T1 > M4 GTS at both tracks (don’t know if it is true, but it looks close-ish). The stock 350Z “should” be slower than SCCA ITA… maybe? The long straight at the ring might falsely increase MPH as compared to tighter tracks, so those times might be a little on the fast side, but let’s just pretend the math works.
