As for importation and such … that’s a bit weird. My ex had a Saturn that was imported from the states legally (they were just those kind of people, too nice and too naive to break the law). It had those stupid seatbelts. She was like 5’ so if I got into the car to drive it, as I moved the seat back, the seatbelt would end up garotting me on the way by.
And I think a few minivans (Previa maybe?) had those things here too.
Ok, don’t take this as 100%, but this is what Peel Region has told their guys through a memo about seat belts.
The law that is violated isn’t “thou shalt not haveth racing harnesses”
what is illegal is tampering, removing or modifying the safety equipment
so having racing harnesses isn’t illegal, it’s NOT HAVING the factory equipment still in place.
I have an american 1993 240sx. I bought it off a used car dealer a couple of years ago. The sales man said that the car was brought here by an american moving here, who then traded it in when they bought a new car. The dealer I bought it from got it from the new car dealer. BTW the car is from texas and is totally rust free. My car is registered and insured under my name and with ontario plates. It had those stupid automatic seat belts, I just removed them and installed Canadian seat belts.
yea body in the us is mint, a little bubble rust and they lower the price mad, what do you have to do to get the car over the border if you have no plates and things. you think buyin a car there and drive a super shyt box 240 across and vin swap and take the good 1 back would work?
Once you’ve established that the car is legal for import,it’s quite simple. (according to the gentleman at RIV)
If you are going to pick the car up personally, you must contact the US boder crossing 72 hours in advance.
If the car is being brought in for you by the owner, they can cross over with a visitors pass. He/she needs to sign the ownership over. Your next step is to contact the Canada customs office, located downtown on Front street. Go in to get your inspection forms. The car must then be inspected by a gvmnt approved centre. (most canadian tires) This IS NOT A SAFETY INSPECTION. It is merely a checl to make sure the car is as stated and IS legal for importation.
If it passes, your next step is to transfer the vehicle, you must pay the 1 tax. If the car was made in the USA, you pay no extra duty. If it is made in Japan, you pay more. If it has AC, you pay another 100 dolalrs.
Now you have to get a safety and you’re good to go!
