Just wanted to put this out there to anyone who might be considering skylights in their home for ventilation and / or additional natural light. We had some regional reps come in from Velux the other day and they had some interesting things to teach us. One of them is the availability of Velux solar skylights that qualify for a 30% federal tax credit. Here’s the best part if this program. You not only receive credit on the cost of the product itself, but on the entire project / installation cost. I’m working with a customer right now who originally wanted manual venting units but may actually get the solar operable units for the same cost or less than the cost of the manual.
We have one of these in our showroom and I must admit they are really impressive. I had a skylight in my last home and always wanted to leave it open during the day, or at night, for fresh air but unless the weather was guaranteed (which it is 99% of the time by the meteorologists) I hesitated to leave it open. I am already planning on installing at least two of these in my third floor bedroom.

The combined effect of these two laws provides a 30% Tax Credit on both the purchase and installation of qualifying products in renewable technologies such as; Solar Electric Property, Residential Solar Water Heating, Qualified small wind energy and qualified Geothermal Heat pump energy as well as others.

One of the coolest features of this setup is # 1: There’s no ripping up walls, ceilings, etc. to run electric wiring to operate these. The solar pack installs right on the unit outside. # 2: the remote control can operate the skylight, blinds, or both and operate individual skylights as well as groups.

Before anyone starts “flaming” skylights for leak issues, skylights (like almost all products / materials) are only as good as the installer and installation methods used to put them in. All roofers / installers here are GAF certified Master Eilte installers and go through training and testing to verify they are qualified to install products correctly.
If there’s something not listed on the website, and you have questions, please let me know and I’ll do what I can to find out for you.
