4th Gen Civic ?'s

I replaced the engine in a 90 civic with the same engine, just newer (I’m assuming because of the few things that I had to change such as the thermastat housing to get it to fit).

Anyway, besides being a pain, I realized that the crank pulley on the new engine was not set up for power steering. After pulling the pulleys to swap them, I realized that the hole in the pulley on the old engine is much larger than the crank in the new engine. Can anyone shed any light on this for me and offer any suggestions on where I can go? I would rather not lose PS.

The engines are both B15D’s, but I have no idea what year the new engine came from.

Some of the early D15 motors had two different main bearing/crank sizes. The larger of the two sizes was also shared with the D16’s. I’m not sure about later D15 motors, but my guess is Honda might have kept doing the same thing. You might have to go though some junkyards or have some people check some swapped out D motors. I’m sure there is a pulley out there with the smaller hole and setup for power steering. If you can measure the difference between the two holes and post them up that might help you out.

If it’s a serpentine system, you might be able to run a different length serpentine belt.

does it matter if its the SI or non SI motor? i have a non SI out of a 90 sitting around i can take the pulley from if that helps you out any

whats the exact engine codes?

On the 88-91 D16A6 motors, pretty sure most of those had the larger pulley. So if its just a 1.5 out of a non Si then yea it might be worth a look.

The car is in a friend’s garage right now. I’ll give him a call and get the engine codes and diameters of the holes in the two pullies.

By the way, I was assuming that the old engine was a D15 (based on what others had said). However, I never thought to go verify it…

Let me see if I understand what you guys are saying. The SI’s came with a D16 and everything else came with a D15 (such as this car, which is a LX). I know that the new engine is def. a D15B because I cleaned the id plate and saw the stamping.

Anyway, I’ll get that information and post it.

Thanks,
Sam

Ok, I have that info…

The old engine has a 1" diameter crank and is a D15B2, serial number: 1643198

The new engine has a 3/4" diameter crank and is a D15B2, serial number: 1629680

Any help that you guys can give would be great.

there is a few different pulleys for the 1.5 as u have noticed. there is a double serpetine w/ a v-belt pulley and just a double serpentine pulley. You need the 3 belt setup.

as for engines, civic/crx si and ex’s came w/ 1.6’s. crx and civic models dx, hf and lx along w/ the standard came w/ a 1.5l variant.

yeah, the 4wd civic wagons came w/ 1.6l too.

dunno about the big/small crank deal. but your not alone. so a quick search for a harmonic balancer found this—
