6.0L Ford Powerjoke Rebuild

While this will not be a TOTAL rebuild, we will be pulling the cab off and getting into the heads. Apparently, it looks like I have at least one failed roller lifter and the consequences of letting it go are pretty substantial, if it hasn’t done damage already. I plan on working side by side with my mechanic to learn as much as I can. We will also be doing a couple “upgrades” while we’re in there to get the motor “bulletproofed”. I wish I had known what I know now about the engine prior to purchasing it. With just over 110,000 miles on the odo I’m not at all pleased to be dumping this kind of cash into a motor which is supposed to run upwards of 300,000 miles, or more with proper maintenance. I paid the extra money for a diesel not just for the power, but the impression that it would last longer and hence save money in the long run. Everything about diesels in general is more expensive (fuel, oil changes, etc.) and I feel cheated that I have to go through this. Hopefully our upgrades will prevent future failures. While there are staunch advocates of this particular motor, there are also those who wish they’d never heard of the 6.0 Powerstroke. Time will tell the tale.

LSX swap

Subscribed, sounds interesting.

Sounds annoying

If anything were going to be swapped it would be a VG30DETT.

Buy a diesel they said, it will last forever they said…

It will…but first you need to do this, this, and that first.

You need to look at total $ invested. I have about $24,000 into my rig and love it. (It is actually waaaaay more but I am not including things like tuner, lift kit, tires, wheels, plow, paint, etc) It may shit the bed but only time will tell.

Long story short; Ford/International have a great engine but they failed by not testing it with crappy USA fuel and oil.

It better roll coal when its done

Yeah because those are easy to work on…

who diagnosed this "failed roller lifter " … we have 40 6.0 vans with 200k + and have NEVER seen this happen

and to blue eyed … testing had nothing to do with 6.0 issues … all the blame goes right to our fucked up government that walked into ford in 2003 and said you can NO LONGER use the 7.3 motor , its too bad of a polluter … the 6.0 wasnt to be ready till late 05 … they had 2 months to get the motor ready

Well, yeah, more to the point.

i got a huge rundown about 6 years ago when i went through ford fleet training

We are going to diagnose one last time as a double check. All the symptoms are there. I’ve also posted a video on a ford diesel site. They pretty much agree at this point.

one of the things i have read is that oil changes must be done religiously.

Egr delete, new turbo, etc, list goes on, always stick with the 7.3, I can’t tell you how many friends I have that have to fix their 6.0s all the time. Guy at work had a 6.0 van and thank god he got it with all the work done. Best of luck tho should be a fun learning experience.

7.3 swap or 12v cummings swap?

The 6.0 has a lot of weak links but once it’s bulletproofed it’s supposed to be pretty solid.

They pretty much all have their quirks. I guess the 6.4 is the worse of the 4 #powerjokes.

The 7.3 is definately “old reliable” but the 6.0 with the variable vein turbo is awesomeness! It puts out about 750 ft/lbs with a simple tuner.

I will give anyone a ride in it. You have never seen 8000# move so effortlessly.

And how does the trans feel about those 750 ft/lbs?

Idk if I’ve ever heard anything bad about a 6.7
