$60K/yr and live in WNY or $100K/yr and live in big city(NYC, LA, etc)?

LOL you don’t even know about government spending…they had “extra money” so they ordered 10,000 iMacs and a shit ton of laptops and every other piece of Mac hardware…then it just sat in a warehouse…they got sick of it sitting so they tried too give it away to any branch of the armed services that wanted it…

I think we know which one I voted for.

There’s a lot of ignorance in this thread as well, but that’s common in a thread about traveling when a lot of people making bold statements haven’t been to a lot of other places.

IMO the only way you can say 100k in a big city isn’t enough is if you are looking to buy a 4 bedroom house with a white picket fence outside in said city. Once you get away from ownership of property, 100k/yr is a lot of money no matter where the hell you live, I don’t care what you say.

My opinion may be a little skewed seeing as I don’t care a whole lot about the “ballerness” of the house I live in, I’m more about getting out and doing/buying things that make me happy, and I can do that in a city where my monthly rent isn’t much less than a lot of your mortgage payments and that’s on a 60k-70k income in a medium-large city.

i’d rather live near a big city and have my finances be tighter than to make more money and be back in buffalo. There’s just so much more to do/see/enjoy in a big city that it just can’t compare.

and now i’ll just sit back and wait for the “but buffalo is amazing you just dont know where to look” arguments.

lol sounds about right

My wife makes great money now and should be in the 6 figure range in the next few years and we have everything we need. If we were to move I would have to get a real job then and wouldn’t be able to peddle my Honda’s or hopefully be a stay at home dad soon. Big cities are great but you can live like a king in Buffalo with that kind of money. Only thing that sucks is Homes in Buffalo don’t go up in value like other parts of the country.

I did pretty much this scenario 4 years ago when I left WNY to move to Orlando, FL and I could not be happier. I was living decent on 60k in a year in b-lo, had a few vehicles (my syclone, newer Blazer 4x4, etc.) and whatnot, but I was not getting ahead as quickly as I would like to.

It is nice living in a state with NO STATE INCOME TAX. And although property prices are higher, property tax is LOWER (ex. my parents house in Lancaster is worth like $250k and they pay like almost $8k a year in property and school taxes. My house outside of Orlando is now worth around $300k [was 350 last year] and my taxes are $2900 a year after my homestead exemption).

And with no state income tax, lower sales tax (6.25% in my county), cheaper gas (about 25-30 cents cheaper a gallon) and better paying jobs (for white collar people… not so many blue collar jobs) it has been like a ‘no brainer’ moving down here.

In 4 years I have more than doubled my net worth (even after losing quite a bit in the housing market this past year), I make better money, started a business and right now I am finishing up my Realtors license in addition to my other real estate and title licenses and I am starting to buy up properties (very cheaply due to foreclosure and pre-foreclosure) and building my real estate investment company to hopefully get myself to the point of making 7 figures in the next 4 1/2 years. It is a lofty goal, but very possible. I don’t think these type of opportunities would have been available to me in Buffalo, especially in my field of real estate, I was making the people I worked for in B-lo rich instead of myself!

I do miss my family and friends back home, the food (although I am much more healthier and in better shape now than I was 4 years ago), Sabres hockey, and a few other things about ‘home’; but overall I say it was a good move to GTFO of Buffalo. Who knows, I may buy a summer vacation home there in a few years?
