400 is a nicer motor i guess if done right.
As long as you run a good low temp thermostat and a decent radiator/big dual fan setup, you’ll be fine with cooling with a stock like motor. Just run the fans on the whole time if it acts up but i dont think it will.
You’ll have to find some better heads for that motor. i think you have 493 heads if its a 71-72. Else it could be 624’s which are SHIT or 882’s which are also kinda poor heads. Either way they all pretty much are weak and need replaced sometime down the road.

Why would a 2 Bolt be better than a 4 bolt?
For what you’re using it for, it really won’t matter at all.
The larger journal size compromises cap strength when you’ve got four holes in the caps.
i was always under the impression that 4 bolts held the main better than 2, but a converted 2 bolt to 4 bolt with splayed caps was the best for strength, even stronger than factory 4 bolt. Atleast thats how it works for 350 blocks from what i’ve seen.
The 400’s bigger main cap (Diameter of 2.65 journal crank compared to 2.45 for a 350) causes the outside bolts on the four bolt blocks to actually weaken the block in the main web area making them more susceptible to cracking under high stress.

but i did get it apart. It is a 4 bolt and the cylinder walls look horrible… I’m afraid 30over won’t do it and I’d be afraid to do more. but I’ll have to see what the machine shop think of it i guess

I would definitely at least let the machine shop look at it. You would be surprised what they can do at .030.
