87 porsche 924s

Hey guys i’m not sure if this is where is goes but it seemed to fit the best. I’m looking at buying an 87 porsche 924s. Just wondering if anyone has one or knows of some reasons not to buy one. I’m a huge honda fan but i just want something different.

WTB in the classified…

honestly, you’re best bet is gonna be ebay. have you looked at 944s or 951s? you can get those for pretty cheap now. just beware, whatever you get is gonna cost a fortune to fix and maintain, something you’re not used to with a Honda. I speak from experience. but the 924, 944 or 951 are all great cars to learn how to drive on a track and autocross with and theres a lot you can do to them to make them handle and stop even better. good luck with whatever you end up getting.

No i no where there is one and I have test drove it. Just want to know how these cars hold up. I know two hondas and I’m just wondering if porsche can stick with hondas relieablity

wow i completly screwed up all my words on that post, hope you guys can understand it.

if the car was maintained and taken care of, it should be fairly reliable. I dont see it being as reliable as a Honda by any means, but as far as being a ‘fun toy’ is should be fine. you just have to make sure you keep on the maintenance and try and find a car with lower miles and that has as many records as possible with it. if you get a car that you know nothing about, just assume the maintenance hasnt been done on it and start getting to work on that.

yeah with a porsche you gotta keep up with the maintenence, problem is its EXPENSIVE as hell. talk to MPD47, he A) will most likely talk you out of it, but if he doesn’t B) he has a 944 that will soon be for sale.

A few words.

924’s are less reliable, parts are harder to find, and are a larger pain to work on in most cases. However, for the most part they are on par with their 944 stable mates for when it comes to costs. Unless you happen to know which parts cross (since all pre 85’s 924’s use the Audi engine IIRC). Which isnt the easiest thing to figure out. If you plan on launching the car, doing burnouts etc, plan on buying a few extra transmissions. The Transaxle should be removed every 60k miles and reshimmed and inspected ($1800), waterpump and timing belt should be done every 30k, along with seals and rollers/tensioners ($1200). Etc, etc.

Buy a 944/944 Turbo/944 S2/968 if you want a front engined Porsche, dont waste your time with the 924 unless you want something unique that has a ton of upkeep (aka you’re already a 944 owner and have a ton of spares laying around). Not to mention the 924 is narrow body and loses out on those sexy flares. Oh yeah, and the fuel and ignition system is significantly inferior on pre 86 924’s. Honda reliable? Sure, if you’ve done ALL of the required maitenance and updates. Budget atleast $1-2k per year for a 924/944 maitenance, $2k or so for a 944S2/968, and $2-5k per year for a 944 Turbo (this figures are for the first 3 years of ownership).

Hey thanks a lot for the imput. You reasured what I have read about them online. I know you are a porsche guy, but I dont’ have the money to do the upkeep on one and I’m not going to get one any more. I think I’ll look into an old 300z I believe z31. My friend is a nissan guy so he can help me out. I just want something different from my front wheel drive hondas and can’t afford an s2000 or my wet dream car NSX. :headbang:
