89 VW Cabrolet engine swap options.

Ok, this is something i am toying with at the moment. There is an 89 VW Cabrolet Wolfsburg edition 5 speed for sale near my work for $400/bo. Talked to the guy and he said it isn’t running, but he thinks it needs a water pump. Should be hopefully going to look at it soon.

With that said, if this does end up in my garage, what are my options for engine swaps and how cheap do you think they could be done for? My local yard has things pretty cheap, and if I could do the swap for under $700-1000, that would be great. I know I can get a motor for $150-200 and a trans for $100. What else would be required for say a VR6 or 1.8T swap?

Neither of those are going to happen for your price range…

Any chance the engine in there is a 16v?

best bet is to find a full doner car, for your price range. find a smashed up… or rusted out… and see what you can buy it for then you know youll have everything you need for the swap. I would stick with a MK3 as most things are pretty much bolt up… if i where you i would go AHU/1z as they hydro tranny is best and that motor will out last the B-baskit.

With some fabrication you can put a b18 in an mk1 no problem. Know a good welder?

Not unless its already been swapped.

16V will basically bolt right up and its been done 309487340783 times.

Car got sold before I could buy it…
