*** Replaced (welded in) new rear cargo area metal. Replaced all 4 shocks. Brand new gas tank. Patched some other rust spots. One small spot on rear of frame looked bad, so I welded on a plate over the spot while I had the tank out. It wasn’t rusted through or anything bad, but metal was getting thin. It was not in a high stress area. With this an the new rear floor, it’s good to go. I had to remove most of the rust from the rear section to weld in the new metal and remove the old. I then sprayed it with primer from Napa (Martin Senour) and then undercoated.
I checked all the lights, the brakes, the e-brake, tires and everything should pass an inspection. Front brake pads have about 1/2-1/3 left. The rotors weren’t great due to it sitting since spring - rust.
165k miles. Underside is pretty rough, but above the rockers is decent. The unibody frame and braces are fine. The floors are still holding up. Needs right pass outside door handle, dent left front. It’s a NY Jeep, so the usual rust stuff. Interior is nice including dash - no rips. Start up quickly, idles nice, good oil pressure. Drives around the yard without any issues. 4x4 works. Tires are good. Brakes are good. No radio.
I do still want the parts even though it’s for sale. If it doesn’t sell by the time I get it all fixed and on the road, I may keep it for a bit. Can PM me a price on the left rear window, and the front bumper. I’m going to go through things on Wednesday and see if I need anything else.
Tranny line is fixed. When I first looked under it I thought it went up to where the oil filer is, but it curves back down to the tranny. I changed the oil/filter today as well. I’ve been bombing around the yard today and it’s pretty snappy, I tried 4L and 4H - both worked fine. Some whine in 4L, but I don’t know how they are supposed to be. Engine also makes what sounds like a knock at idle, but again I don’t know the characteristics of the 4.0L motor. I’ve read they can be a bit noisy. It does not smoke, hesitate, stall, and oil pressure is about 40 when warm.
Someone better buy this before it ends up on it’s roof in the field:D
I’ve started down the path of getting it on the road. I knew the rear shocks would be a PITA and they were. I had to pull up the rear carpet, cut out some of the rear floor to get to the top of the weld nuts. Lot’s of drilling, air hammering, cutting but they are out cleanly. New shocks are ready to go in now. I knew the rear floor would be rotted over the frame rails and cross support, so new metal will be welded in place of most of the rear floor. Next I’ll be inspecting the brakes and replacing as needed. Then onto a new muffler and tailpipe. This should be the only things left to inspect. If you are interested, get it know, because once it’s inspected and on the road price is going up.
I know, but the wheels/tires are good and fit Cherokee and Wranglers. Lots of good parts on it. Many of the parts also fit Wranglers like some of the suspension components and drive train. While the motor does make some noise, it would be a good Wrangler rebuild/stroker candidate or swap it in place of a 4cyl and run it until it quits. I know lots of them are in the scrap yards already since that’s where I get parts, but not many with motors that run. I may even keep some of it and look for a cheap Wrangler with a bad motor or 4 banger. The 4.0 motors can make good power.
