98 Kouki No Start- post ur thoughts please

Hi guys,

I dont post here at all, so feel extremely stupid as I write this but here is goes…

I have a 98 kouki with a KA completely stock with the execption of an aftermarker alarm and around 250,000kms. The car has been sitting in my driveway since februrary, before that, i had no problems whatso ever.

I went to start it up yesterday and i heard a fast clicking noise coming from the passengerside footwell area. The car did not engage the starter, however the dash lights were illuminated in acc position. i figured the battery didnt have enuf amperage to initiate the starter, and luckily, my mother was pulling up the driveway comin home from work. i hooked up some booster cables, got into the kouki to start her up and… NOTHING! I rechecked the cables, they were on tightly and correctly it’s just strange because it seemed like the car wouldnt accept the boost.

dash lights are illuminated in acc, headlights, wipers, radio work on acc. battery? ignition switch? starter? any specific fuses to check? locations of those fuses? i’m so pissed off because i had to ride in the rain yesterday and it was raining way too hard this morning so i had to take the bus. Even worse. Help…

took off colomn covers/ checked the ignition switch, everything looks fine. dash lights illuminate in acc position…

May sound weird, But my starter is going out and i have to tap it to get the car to start. its worth a shot…haha

oh thanks, can you tell me specifically where it’s located? i’ll giver a shot

under the intake manifold, beside the oil filter, its the thing closest to the firewall.

Mine did the same before the starter went. Im gonna say starter.

yeah look where kapetajr said. it’ll be similar looking to this:

try tapping the solenoid housing with a wrench or some other blunt object when trying to start the car (usually best if you get another person to help you).

i would also say…be careful and wear some gloves if you’re tapping the starter with something metallic. good luck.

thank you guys, i found the starter exactly where u guys said it would be and got my dad to smack it with a pry bar. Nothing happened, although there was a very distinct buzzing noise sounding like it was comin from the starter solenoid. i guess i’ll take it off and test it over the weekend, looks fairly easy to access… i guess starters are a more common kouki fault than sticky ignition switches (?)

Push start your car lol. It’s a 12 year old starter with 250K on it. That’s not a fault, it’s just worn and torn. In the mean time, clutch in, pop it in second, turn the key in the ignition till the dash illuminates, an get someone to push you. Pop the clutch after you get rolling a bit an it should start.

i dont need to bump start my car it’s on my driveway, where am i guna go? hahahaha lol but besides, i already kno how to do it i’ve left my headlights on my bike 1 too many times haha. but i dont see a starter as wear and tear at all, i mean, they’re not wiper blades… there’s people driving around in 69 cameros with original starters from factory. but i dont know, i’m no expert  i’ll have an update monday and maybe an install w/pics on how to do it just in case this happens to anyone else…

sounds like a starter, keep tapping it. need to brake it free from whatever jams it. corrosion?

hey yall just wanted to update… it was in fact the starter, so got a new one and she fires right up! thanks guys for all the input!!!
