99 jetta cd changer not working

My fiancee’s battery died this past weekend in her 99 jetta(the 93-99 model, not 99.5-04), so we replaced it, and now the cd changer won’t play. When the cd option is selected, it just says “cd error”. The sound system manual doesn’t say anything about this, other than to eject the magazine and put it back in, but the magazine won’t eject now either. I checked the connection of the cd changer and it’s fine.

Could this have anything to do with everything being reset due to the new battery? I’m just hoping the cd changer isn’t shot and a new one needed.

Thanks for any input.

i’d unplug the battery, then pull the headunit and unplug it… then put it all back together and put power to it… should clear the codes

do you have the double-din cd / tape player? or single?

you can clear that code with a computer and it should reset the radio.

the head unit is the single w/ the cassette player. i didn’t want to pull it, but i’ll give it a shot this weekend. thanks for the info.

and the radio kept the pre-programmed radio stations throughout the battery change. weird. so i guess it probably just needs reset.

i still have my factory cd changer from my 97 golf, i just might part with it if you need one.

our radios log trouble codes… i’m not too sure aobut the single dins as muhc… but my double din stores codes and sometimes literally needs pulled out and replugged in to work.

i just had to pull adn clear codes on jenn’s Gti about a month ago… after i changed her dead battery out

good luck

thanks for all the info

I hope its not like my cars cd player when i disconnect the battery from it you have to enter a code in it cause it thinks its been taken out of the car an stolen

it is, but she still has the code, so it’s all good :mrT:

actually… the radio has a security code, but it will only ‘kill’ itself if you try to power the headunit without one of the ‘information’ wires going to it… leave it to vw to have a radio with 2 harness clips with about 30 wires. the wire is labeled as the K wire.

i bet you’ll be fine if you just pop it out, unplug, give it a couple seconds and power it all back up.

well i pulled the cd player, unplugged it, and no luck. it still says “error.”

any other suggestions?

Maybe the connection got tweaked back in the trunk. When I put a PhatBox in my mom’s Jetta, if the connection wasn’t just right, the headunit didn’t see it.

The headunit recognizes it as being there, cause i disconnected the connetion from the changer to the headunit and it said it wasn’t there, then plugged it back in, and got the error message again. i have no idea what’s wrong with it.

does the rest odf the radio work? or does it just say error and does nothing.

yeah, everything else works fine, just not the cd changer. it says error and beeps at me.
