Action against Federal Vehicle Scrappage Program

Urgent Action Alert
Oppose Federal Vehicle Scrappage Program

Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.
The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

Talking Points
Oppose the Use of U.S. Taxpayer Dollars for Cash for Clunkers
• I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers” provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a “minimal” payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved.

• “Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage.

• Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.

• “Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.

• “Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.

• We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.” Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter.

meh… do you REALLY think that peopl are going to be turning in old hemi cuda’s and corvette’s for this program…

99% of the crap turned in, is crap… old K cars and caprices and holdovers from the late 80;s etc

:word: good riddance to most of what would be turned in. It will be like a $250 tax check, do you really htink theyll get anything decent? The less smoky pieces of shit that are on the road going slow and rattling in front of me, the better.

Not to mention, it gives poor FGGT’s a line to give the dealer when they go get their $50 to test drive a new Ram. “I heard da government was gonna give me money to crush my 1990 acclaim”

True, but did you read the talking points? Especially:

Less parts cars in junkyards. Some idiots will turn on classics or good donor cars.

You think they will turn in their only car for $250 ? Then they have to go and buy a new one.
The big picture here is that yes they are trying to stimulus new car sales, but there will be less parts cars available. You will have to pay full price over the counter for a new part.

And why do they have to stick their noses more into our hobby. What’s next?
Breathalizers built into your ignition. Trackable black boxes? Speed regulators?

+1. The POS cars you can’t stand to be behind because their belching out a smoke screen. I’m glad they’re offering people some money to take them off the road. The few people driving real “classics” as beaters have driven them into the ground so bad that no enthusiast would want to use them for parts anyway.

I don’t think the bill will make a big difference either way. A guy driving a $500 beater blowing smoke isn’t doing it because he loves the car, he’s doing it because he’s poor. No tax incentive is going to let him afford to go buy a new Cobalt.

time to get the junk off the road

Yes. I think this is really being geared to give people a few bucks to get true pieces of shit, or “clunkers” off the road. They’re not gonna start giving out 5 grand to crush anything. Anything that they take in likely should be scrapped anyway. And any parts car you’re gonna want is going to be worth more. Think about it, if it’s worth a damn, the junkyard will offer more money, or someone will offer to buy as a parts car. And I’m not sure what this has to do with all of that big brother shit. This is a completely voluntary program that will clean up some of the crap.

I thought they passed a law that if Joe and I agreed on legislation it automatically passed?

i would have done this to my 92 vw golf. rusted out floor needed a clutch and cable bad syncros burnt oil and coolant needed brakes needed shocks had rust and some minor electrical problems starting bumper cover was held on by wire. exhaust as rotted out list goes on…it did get 30mpg tho

So otherwise unmotivated people drag cars out of fields and off the blocks on their front lawn for $250, and take that cash and inject it into the economy? Then SDI gets scrap metal at a cheap price?

Aside from the whole big brother assault on the junkyard industry :cjerk: I can see no rational reason to oppose this.

I would be 100% in favor of that. That would pretty much guarantee that it’s plain old logical.

Great, more retarded, feel good programs that do absolutely nothing to help.
It has become a DC tradition!
They can’t keep their fucking noses out of anything.

I knew if anyone would agree with this it would be Blue Eyed Devil.

Is that a good thing? j/k

Honestly though, who comes up with this shit?!?
Everyday I think the House and Senate are a little more retarded.

It’s all good until you need to go to the junkyard for parts for your Civic project for example, and there isn’t anything available. Places that have parts will charge a small fortune, because it’s either them or the dealer, if the parts are even available. $250? People were getting $100+ more than that when scrap peaked this year, and yards will still pay $100 or so for your junker. The difference is, junkyards keep cars around and sell the good parts. The government wants to crush them whole, so that owning an older car becomes so uneconomical that people will be driven to buy new cars. So this plan won’t get more $250 junkers off the road, but it will make owning your $2000 Civic more difficult and expensive.

Leave it to Nancy Pelosi to come up with something like this. I hope someone pushes that dumb cunt in front of a bus.

not everyone. i love driving crap cars. lol. mine dont smoke though. they run great.

Update?
