Im putting a set of corbeau seats in my 2006 jeep liberty, the passenger side seat has a passenger occupant sensor (in seat weight sensor), i would like to do this swap correctly because i daily drive this vehicle so it needs to be safe. If anyone on here has done a seat swap and retained all of the factroy safety features i would greatly appreciate any info or help with the install. I am looking to not damage the factory seat so that it can be reinstalled if i ever sell the vehicle.
the sensors are usually glued, embedded, to the foam or a pad that lies on the foam itself. The only way to see it is to carefully pull the base apart and see how it is. You should be able to remove it and the harness and transfer to the new seat. Just take your time and don’t damage the pad and you could always transfer it back to the old seat if it didn’t work.
I assume you could just jump the clip on the body harness when you remove the factory seats, to make the car assume an ass was in the seat so in an accident the airbag would pop off normally.
I dont know the sensor characteristics myself, but I assume its just an ON/OFF switch. I dont see it being an active thing based on actual weight, but I didnt design the system.
You would probably have to figure out what the resistance of the sensor is in the closed position. If you just jumper the connect it will probably throw a DTC for a short then disable the system. Also if it’s anything like a GM the warning chime will sound constantly when the seatbelt isn’t buckled since it’s registering somebody in the seat with the belt not fastened.
it’s a pressure switch, no manufacturer actually lists what the exact weight is to set the switch on or off, all most people know is it’s between 40lbs to 80lbs. you can swap the switch over, it’s just going to be a pain in the ass to do, and your going to completely ruin the lower seat cushion to get the sensor out.
HAVE FUN!!!
I had a brand new jetta as a rental a few months ago. My iPad on the pass seat was enough to trigger it and make the seatbelt warning chime.
my acura could take my briefcase on the passenger seat and the bag light was never set, on the lexus it would do it every now and then, and in the volkswagen it would never go off. so every manufacture is different.
it is odd that an ipad would set it off by itself. but then again it’s a rental, no idea whats going on with those.
There are several different systems in use by different manufacturers. Not going to bother with how the different ones work but one electronic type is very sensative to different signals emitted by tablet and smart phones.
Hit it with a hammer
thanks for all the input guys, ive been out of town for a few days so i was unable to reply sooner, the brackets will be here monday and once they are in ill get to swapping all the shit from the stock passenger seat to the new one, i peeled the cushion back on the stock seat and i could see the sensor so hopefully it’s fairly simple to take out
Its a shot in the dark but once in a while if you go to a dealership and talk to a service guy they might know. Especially if they just so happened to do it themselves or had been asked before.

i installed the drivers seat last night, it was easy because all it has for electrical is the sensor in the seat belt (1 cable), i was getting the other seat ready and from the looks of it the only way to take the aftermarket seat apart is to basically destroy it, so adding the stock weight sensor to the aftermarket seat may be out of the question, after a bit more research it turns out the stock sensor is basically a strain gauge and senses different weights, not just an on or off signal, anyone here have experience with these systems? or with upholstery? im looking for either a work around or someone who can install the seat sensor into the new seat for me
