They will release the test location in the mail by letter. If you choose Albany County, it will probably be at Sand Creek middle school.

i believe there is a spot for you to say where your going to be taking it if you signed up for more then one…you have to pay for each app. fee when you sign up…
It’s a run of the mill statewide civil service exam. I’m taking it as well for my county. There are study guides available on the civil service website and I went to Borders-Barron’s makes a study book specifically tailored for the NYS exam. As far as I can see, you don’t have to know anything about police operations to pass it. You’ll be tested on memory skills, reorganizing notes into coherent and accurate sentences, interpreting written info, and applying protocol in various situations.
As for cross applying-that’s only if you are applying for 2 different counties. When you take the one test in your county, it covers deputy and local PD departments. If you do well enough, then you get to pick and choose which ones you want to interview with.
negative…unless rules were changed…you have to apply for each dept. that you want to take the test for…they want the money for the app fee. i think what you explained only happens when a dept is in desperate need for recruits…
what i had to do was…apply for say colonie, watervliet,alb co sheriff, albany pd…i had to go to each city hall and fill out their app.,pay for each test and then let each dept know where i would be taking the test. then take the 1 test that was good for each dept.
p.s dont waste your money on a pre test book…didn’t help me 1 bit.

ah well the deadline is 10/08 so i guess i’m just signed up for the one exam. I’ll ask when i get there about the others, maybe they will let you pay later. I can’t see the state not taking my money. :tong

Well, not entirely negative. I just checked the Albany County Civil Service site. It is entirely different than my county. In Sullivan County, the one test applies to Sheriff and Local PDs. I see Albany has two different tests. I figured civil service would of been the same through the state shrugs.
Only way to answer the fee question and such then is to call personnel/human resources at the county seat I guess.
