An idea I am working on... help would be appreciated...

Hey fellas, anyone with LED tail lights can probably tell you that cops hate them. I’ve had all local cops here on my case about mine. I have to have some kind of stock tail light on it or I get pulled over pretty much immediately. My plate is also a cause for concern being in my window at the moment. There is also no light for it in my window. So I designed this thing. I’ve seen similar things done but I’m workin on designing my own and have run into a few snags. First off here is a quick 3d rendering I made. The first picture is how it will look parked/crusing. Pretend this is looking at the back edge of my pickup truck bed.

Then with the push of a button you get this:

I am using OEM Wrangler lights or trailor lights. I’m still checking on the legality of the trailor lenses. For reverse lights I plan on using either small fog lights or headlights (not pictured) to exaggerate the brightness. I am also gonna light up my plate like the sun with 4 - 6 plate lights.

What I need help on is the rear pivot point. I’m not sure how I am going to get it to pivot in the rear. I was thinking maybe a hood hinge of some sort. The simpler the better. Another idea was to get some heavy duty door hinges at Lowes or Home Depot. Any thoughts??

why would you go through all that trouble because you would never be able to drive it with out that thing up

 :ugh2:  :weak:

because The Man says I need tail lights and I want it to be neat. That is why.

id pass, got to be another way

still alot of work. mold a set of LX mustang tails or Older Z28 tails into your rollpan. that would be unique and cool looking.

f the hinges have it in a slide and just use acuators or how ever its spelled

I dont have actuators. I have air rods that I am using.

use the air rods to tilt the bed or something and mold the lights in the roll pan. depending on how thick the steel is will determine the type of hinge

I’m not a good enough fabricator to make the entire bed tilt. Also I don’t want to mold anything else into the skin, I like it smooth. The frame will be 1/2 or 3/4 square tube with sheet metal covering it. The hinge will need to be rather durable.

Can anyone think of a vehicle with a really simple hinge on the hood or trunk? I’m gonna check on my uncle’s old pickup. I remember it having simple parts. Spring loaded hinges would be cool too as long as it didn’t hold it in the up position.

sounds heavy you would have to make a pin hinge which is pretty simple

how bout some piano hinges??

they usually are pretty strong. they hold doors up ans shit like that

We sell them at the Depot cheap…would be great if that would work:D

I’m not familiar with a piano hinge. What kind is that?

I was thinking of doing some kind of pin style hinge but wanted something that could be removed if need be. I don’t know how i could make it removable unless I made half of it bolt to a support. That would be ideal since I will need a support for the back panel anyways.

What about hinges from a car door? you could put one on each end and one in the middle. They will give you the clearance and strengh you need for that thick of a frame and they can be hiddend underneath for a cleaner look.
