Ancient Laptop Problems Wont End...

Ok, now with this piece of shit Compaq Presario 17XL260…
I upgraded to 512MB RAM, got a Compaq CD/DVD-R/RW ROM.
NOW, I went and bought a Linksys Wireless network card. It said on the box that its compatable with Win98se (which I have, and I know its oooold).
So, I go about installing the program and it comes to a point where I need to install the ORIGINAL Windows 98se SYSTEM disk. I dont fuggin have it since I bought the laptop used.
Now, wtf do I do (besides throw it against a fuckin wall.).
can I just format and install a better Windows…like XP? (if someone knows where I can get a full version that I can run (for mree) please PM me.
I was also going to upgrade the processor to a Compaq 850/ 700MHz Intel Mobile Pentium III SpeedStep Processor.

Someone please help me…lol.:nite:

what you could do is…

Hey can anyone find me win 98se… cause its burning right now

or you could install windows xp… its really up to you… i think the upgrade would be a much better idea for you

if i were u i would upgrade to windows 2000. it will run slightly better then xp will

Anyone know where I could get a Win program?? :snky:

familiar with torrents?

no…

well being a 700mhz with 512 it would run XP but not well, i agree with the win 2000 idea. that will work the best for you when it comes to an OS, its stable and will run much better then XP. or if you dont want to mess with all that then you could just ask for someone to get you a copy of Windows 98 so you can continue with what you have.

Where are you located? If you feel like stopping by tonight I can give you a copy of 98 or 2k.

Sent PM to u ^

Now “bench racing” with my laptop…hehe

How 'bout If I was to buy a 30GB hard drive, a 850/700MHz PentiumIII, or even a 1GHz PentiumIII processor…with my maxed 512MB RAM…would WinXP still give me trouble? Like I said…this is for reading writing, scanning, charting my PCM.

Thanks!

When it asks for the original disk, ignore it. The files ARE there.

You have to manually type in either “C:\Windows” “C:\Windows\System32” in the box at the bottom.

If it gives the file name its looking for, and its not in those two folders… the next step is to use the Start ->Find option and search for the file, then put the location in the box. It may be in the \drivers folder.

Good luck  You’ll get it.

Ugh…ever since the initial time I thried to install the wireless adapter…it doesn’t give me any options for it. Ive Uninstalled and tried reinstalling a few times now. I suck at the doftware parts of computers…

OK, I managed to get everything installed…BUT, now it says “no association with access point”

Not to hikack your thread but I kind of have teh same problem with my neighbors computer. It keeps saying something about some Kernel file. It has win 98 on it and its all fucked up. Can someone lend me a 98 or 2000?
