Anyone bump out their garage to fit a car?

I want to bump out the front of my garage 3’, I would have to move the garage door and header that is in place now(up 1’) and build a small shed style roof. Just wondering if anyone has done this so I can get some ideas. My garage is 17’ long and my car is 17.5’ long, go figure.

probably cheaper to buy a mini or miata.

Do like they did in the 50’s and add a “caddy bumpout” to the back of the garage. My buddy had one of these on the original garage when he bought his house. It was just high and wide enough for to allow a huge ass car to fit.

Dan

My grandfather has something like this in his for their old Lincoln, was just enough for the huge bumpers to fit in.

they decided not to ever do this in my 1920s garage. I have the cinderblock damage to prove it

My dad did the same bumpout at our lake house garage, just enough room to fit the boat in the garage. Looks a little silly on the back the garage but much better than storing the boat outside…

Yeah my dad has one for his El Camino on the back of his garage but I wanted to do the whole front of my garage 4’ longer and move the garage door. I cant find shit on the internets for pics of people doing it.

if i were to tackle something like this, i would leave the existing header there as it is a structural part of the house. then build out from that existing wall the 3’ you are looking for and have another header/frame for the new “otuside” of the garage.

got a pic of said area? or the front of the house?

Thats what I am gonna do, I have a foot above my header now that I am gonna use to push the existing header up to so the rails for the garage door fit under it in the new position.

cool, i dont think that would be a problem to do it that way and just add onto the roof and extend it out or whatever. nice car btw man

Thanks. I have a general idea what i want to do but there are no pics online at all that I can find of what I want. I searched every key word you can think of. I am also thinking about getting side/wall mount garage opener to clear some head room for maybe a lift. I have a hip roof, there is a lot of room in my garage with no rafters. I plan on getting a POD storage and putting everything in there for a week and drywalling, insulating, electrical, air lines, floor, windows, overhaul. I am kinda done with the house so its time for something for myself since I got kicked out of my mancave in the attic.

They did this to the garage at my old place, since there was no room behind it for the caddy bump. They left the headers in place (3 single doors) and replaced the wood supports with steel support posts. Then they extended the rood down to the new doors. Because the way they did it, I lost a little height at the doors, but it did give me the 3 feet extra across the whole thing. I don’t have pictures, nor would you want them, cause it looked like home built 40’s/50’s built.

There is a guy near me who basically built a complete 2 car garage infront of his 2 car garage and even left the doors of the original in place. He can close them up to use the back part, and keeps two classics in there, then parks his daily driver’s in the front one. He just carried the roof line up and back down to make it match. Here is my old place for reference. You can see where the original garage ended on the side.

My grandfather did the same thing at his garage (leaving the header and just building on). It looks a little funny inside but it works great and allows you to build the addon much lighter since it only has to support the weight of the small roof addon.

My garage also has a rear bump out. I didn’t know what it was till I saw this thread

I would like to see this done in 2015, to code.

I told ya it was probably built when someone realized their new land yacht wouldn’t fit! I didn’t know there was a name for them.

All done, just bumped it out enough to fit her in.

Can I ask why you made it the exact size of the car? It would drive me mental to have to be like a refueling tanker lining up with a fighter jet just to park the car.

was wondering same thing, seems like you have only 2" on both sides.

Seriously though he probably doesn’t daily drive this thing so the few times he’ll have to dock the space station won’t be that stressful.
