There is a guy at work that might be offloading a VW jetta for cheap because he can’t get it to run right. I guess he has tried cap n rotor, wires etc… I guess it starts, then runs real rough and dies.
I’m guessing its mid to late 90’s
He’s an older guy that I am betting hates most things computerized.
I don’t have any details other than what I stated and that he will be looking for me. One way or another he will get rid of his car.
I have done some digging and seen that people have problems with the ignition systems. I also read all the techies want a vag com output before trying to troubleshoot anything.
He has replaced plugs, wires, coils and swapped in a used ECU.
After all that it started then ran really rough and died. Now it does not start.
He also told me that years ago, he had the distributor replaced and that got it running again.
I’m trying to get him to find out if his mechanic kept the old ECU, as it might store codes(I hope it would)
My problem now, is that he thinks I might be able to fix it and might be willing to
pay me to fix it… LOL… Am I a terrible salesman/customer or what?
How much would it be worth if it ran? It could be fun if I bought a wolfsburg like MrSmith might.
Ok, so the thing just about starts and runs, but quickly starts running rough and dies out. I’m told that as soon as the ECU was replaced it started and ran fine for a few minutes. Then died out and is in its present state.
If I thought It was worth $1500 with bald tires, no e brake etc… I would buy the thing.
If it is a relatively simple and “guaranteed” fix, he would be just as happy to keep driving it.
