the murder was premeditated the victims as far as i can tell from the readings were not premeditated thus making the act of car jacking those specific two people random

I think you are failing to comprehend that it could have been a black couple in the car and the outcome would have been the same for them.
Premeditated in the sense they were going to car jack the first car they saw that had a man and woman in it and do what they did.
