I’m looking to pick up a dewalt cordless impact gun, 1/2" drive.
I have an immediate need for an impact to pull a crank sprocket, don’t know if this will fit the bill for it but I can borrow the nieghbor’s compressor and impact, but I know the neighbor’s air impact is really weak, and the cordless would have more torque.
In the long run, I think it would make quick tire changes easier without having to pull out a compressor or airlines… and I could take it to events to change wheels quicker.
Does anyone have one or experience with one?.. I’m trying to make sure that I’m not wasting money. I’m half tempted to spend the extra money to buy a compressor and more powerful impact, but I’m also running out of any kind of space in my garage. At least for the next 3 months, after that I’ll have a little more room to store the compressor. I just think for the size and space it takes, and portability it might be nice to have.
The nitrous fill station shop i went to had a cordless impact and they were very impressed with its power. Did well on wheel stud nuts and easily over torqued things if not set right.
Thanks Sean, if I borrow one then I’d probably never get around to buying one. The immediate need for one, makes a good excuse to buy one. This is actually the one I was looking at http://www.toolbarn.com/product/dewalt/DW059K-2/
It’s got more MAX torque than a lot of the cheapie air impact guns (50 or less) at 300 MAX torque.
I think I’ve heard enough (even if it’s only two people…lol) I just needed the push to spend the money. I’ve been borrowing my neighbor’s compressor when I need one bigger than my nailer compressor… but his “freebie” impact that came with his compressor is weak, and don’t think it’s going to be worth going next door dragging the compressor over, filling it, pulling the bolt, and wheeling it back next door… when I could just charge a battery and then have it ready for next time…
I want one also, thats not a bad price considering cost is $276 and retails for $324
dewalt makes a 36v 1/2 impact that has insane torque.
my buddy as a goodyear racing cordless impact from pepboys, im surprised how powerful it was, took a lug nut right off one of my wheels that was put on with an IR impact. Im sure the dewalt is 10x better then that
I don’t think I’d use it enough to warrant a Snap-on… I broke down and grabbed one last night. On my way out the door I took off an axle nut that I hadn’t been able to break loose. Kick Ass - very glad I picked it up. Excited to pull the crank sprocket off tomorrow, so I can change the oil pump and start putting the car back together!
We have 4 of the dewalts ones at work and IMO they are garbage. They wont even pull a 5" lag bolt out of a 6x6 timber. For much more than lugs nuts, they suck. And even at that, for us they suck. They do not develop anywhere near they rated torque. All in all, I will stick with the IR air impact. Much better, but you gotta drag the hose around.
I think it rocks! It broke the rusty nut loose from the front axle, and it took out the crank sproket bolt really well. All in All I’m very happy with it. I can’t imagine it would have any kind of hard time on Lug Nuts, but have no need to change out any rims right now…
I would go with a serious air impact, but I couldn’t take it to events
i have the snap-on 1/2 drive cordless. best 525 i spent on a tool in a while. i use it for everything i can. i always torque lugnuts w/ a click beam tq wrench. yet i use the impact to start them. also is awesome to change out tires at the track. every race it has been to this year it gets passed around the pits like darkstar’s mom. it easily gets atleast 200 nuts off…
seriously though, atleast 7 cars w/ a total of 134 lugnuts between them.
take street wheels off, race wheels on, race wheels off, street wheels back on all on 1 battery pack.
off the tool truck or snap on’s website direct. i’d stay away from buying used unless you know the person.
i know matco has a lithium ion battery impact. but they only give you 1 battery claiming it lasts longer than snap on. i dont care what brand it is, you allways want a back-up battery ready to go.
last few years i spent atleast 5k a year on tools. this impact is by far the best thing i got in a while. keep in mind, i dont really use 1/2 drive shit. most assembly work is done w/ 1/4 drive or 3/8 drive tools. the way battery technology is going, i can see alot fo mechanicss being air-less in 5 years.
other snap on power tool that impresses me is the battery screw driver/gun they have. it is a 1/4 inch drive gun that has enough grunt to break fender bolts loose. comes in a holster w/ 10 bits. im sure an equivalent of this could be had at sears though. i think it was 125 bucks or there abouts. everyone in the body shop next to my work bought one. they all love them so far.
maybe we should have a tool thread? reviews and rants of various tools.
i don’t use impact enough to throw down a huge chunk of change on a cordless one or to buy a nice compressor so i bought the electric one from harbor freight…works good for lugs & the little bit i do @ my house.
i don’t think they have many to pick from. you should be able to pick it up & get a set of the pittsburgh deep impact sockets, for around $75 for everything.
u are getting what you pay for with harbor freight, buy it right the first time, SNAP ON, 20g or more invested in snapon tools and haven’t been disappointed with a single purchase yet. You pay a lot for the name, but they are damn good tools.
