anyone ride dirtbikes on ice?

I was thinkin about studding my tires and taking my bike up to my friend’s lakehouse and doing some ice riding, anyone else here done that before?

i know smokinss does it on his 4wheeler up on lake george

yah…I have a extra studded set of wheels/tires for the winter…practice around on round lake and race on lake george if the lake is frozen…im on a quad tho.

sweet deal, wanna go this winter when it freezes over?

yah…lake george is always the last to freeze over

round lake is usually the first tho

snyders pond is usuaully one of the first also. i should be all studded in a week or 2.

my friend’s got a cabin up on Canada lake we could go to also.

What would you suggest for studding?

I came across these when searching

When I had my quad a lot of bikes went over in this cove on the mohawk river, they had a little circle track plowed.

its called Wagers pond…its a popular place for ice riders.

The place we went with the sleds last year?

I got a group of friends that ice race. I will post when and where when it comes time.

Ill have my POS out there this year

My YFZ450 with 110 1.5" carbides and plastic backers… fronts were koldkutters. This thing hooked up and floated great on packed snow. Ice was good, but it only had like 6 sharp edges contacting at a time. SOOOO. the TurfTamer tires with 500 Koldkutters PER tire… they hooked up on ice better than normal tires on asphalt!

I really want to stud the KTM625 up with koldkutters, since one tire has a hole in it and the other is just about shot anyways. The only thing I am worried about is holding air… I think the shortest kold kutters will puncture the tire and when they pull out leak. BTW, the 110 snowmobile studs I had above, still have the origional 8PSI I had in them 5 years ago!!! 3 tubes of RTV FTW!

sick./…your quad looks familier…do you locally ride on the ice? how do you like your Elka’s?

I have turd tammers with 500 studs in each tire…didnt hook that well last year but they are all wicked dull…need to get new ones.

I kept blowing my tire off the rim last year on the ice as well…pain in the ass

I used to stud my tires on my 50 and screw around on ponds with it.

I raced Royal MT alot with it, and Twister Valley for practice. The Elkas were great shocks. 18.5" quad rate compression/rebound adj long travel, valved for 150lb rider (I am 145lb or so with gear) and set up for XC. I started with JB Racing +2/2 arms. They were OK, but were really heavy and handeling felt slow and had a hard time dialing them in all the time. I switched them out for Houser +2 long travels. MUCH better. Abit lighter, caster adjustable and handled alot better. I also ran the stock rear shock with axis dual rate spring and Elka XC link.

If I get a quad again, I will be fucked. Reason being, once you ride a fully suspended long travel machine, you can not go back. My buddy has a YFZ with TCS rebuilt stockers and stock arms, and it is no where near the ride I got. It is so much safer too. You watch any stock YFZ, TRX450, even the Suzuki 450 go through woops, breaking bumps, landing short/long on jumps… it is very hard to hang on and the machine is all over the place and working so hard. I go through the same thing on my quad, and it is like butter. total night and day difference. 2 years ago at twister on the big track, there is a double, double single section… I went for a double tripple and cased the shit out of the last one on, befor I had the suspension. top of 3rd gear… ass end rebounded and I endoed the landing right off the rev limiter tring to bring it back down… somehow kept from slaming my self over the bars. After the suspension, figured I would try it again, again, cased it just as hard. Rear end compressed, held and I just rode on all 4 tires down the landing and set my self up for the corner, the flag guy stopped me later and said I was the only quad tring that 2x/3x section.

did you race royal a few summers ago? I was on a Blue 250r (#11) in the Am class. Won 3rd over all in the Am class for the year…Then at Hickory hill I broke my wrist off the 90 foot double and havent really been back to royal since.

I know what you mean about long travel. I have the Roll design Lobo 2 long travel a-arms on my quad (+3) with custom axis long travel tripple rate shocks…also have a long travel PEP ZPS rear shock and roll design long travel rear swingarm. Its BY FAR the best handling quad I have EVER ridden/owned.

I never raced at twister valley but I went to watch my cousin and buddy race…sick track. I would love to get out there for practice.

Yeah I think I remember see in that quad at the track. I am torn between getting another YFZ and doing suspension or getting another dirtbike. I like the quad becasue there are not alot on the track and I like riding something different. I like the challange of a quad in a GNCC track/trail. With mud, rocks, rutts… But I like the dirtbike on fast smooth trails, where you can flick it around and what not. I cant ride a dirtbike in sand very well yet. I love hill climbs and blasting a climb where nobody tried yet. I dont like a quad rolling down the climb and being in pieces at the bottom, and a dirtbike just flops over and sticking in the hill most of the time… and you can jump off and not bet slammed by it. I am great on a track with a quad, and decent on the bike… but I dont trust 30 other “MX racers” on the track. it is a little easier to stay in one piece when racing 10-15 quads I feel.

I juts watched Huevos 11,203,001 or what ever the new one is, so now I want another quad again! lol

yah I love quads because they are different but when you crash them, chances are you get hurt.

here is my 250R I use to race at royal that you might remember…
