As for bolt guns both Reminton and Savage make great rifles.
Currently Savage has some nicer factory features like the accutrigger and the new accustock. It is hard to beat the accutriger in a factory gun.
I recently sold one of my 700’s and purchased my first Savage center fire bolt gun. I am really impressed with the fit and finish of the new savage, and I can not wait to get the base, rings and optics on it and get it broke in.
My dad is a member of a gun club. I talked to a few of the guys in there that work for the police dept as sharp shooters/snipers. A lot of the guys swear by Savage rifles. relatively inexpensive, and very very accurate. This guy there had just finished shooting when my father and I pulled up to the range to do some target practicing. He shot a .510" group at 100 yards with a savage .223. Thats pretty fucking impressive. 6 rounds in an area smaller than a dime at 300’.
not knocking your friend but that group size isn’t really THAT impressive at 100 yards. I can do that iron sights on an AR15. Don’t get me wrong that’s great but not spectacular. If he has that group at 300 yards I’d be a little more impressed out of a bolt gun.
it was a brand new out of the box riffle that he was just playing with becuase he had never fired it yet. Just saying that out of the box savage makes some really great guns. I want to get something that will be a tac driver at 300+ yards. But I dont want to spend 1500 on a rifle. If I had the extra cash I so would though. I am thinkin of picking up a Marlin lever action .30-.30. They are great mid range rifles.
No reason to buy used, just pick up a stevens (aka a savage 10) in .223 or .308. The prices on them new is pretty darn low and with a few changes you can not beat them for the price.
true. I know stevens is built by savage. Even a new basic Savage rifle is only like $4-500. Throw on a semidecent scope and you got yourself a butt kickin rifle.
Bushmaster, Colt, Armalite, RRA, DPMS and S&W. You can’t really go wrong with any big name brand. You should be able to purchase what you want with $1000. Shortest barrel you can run on a rifle is 16" without be considered a SBR short barreled rifle. For a 10.5" carbine you would have to move from NYS and pay the ATF a tax stamp
LOL its not being discussed as hitting a target that size. It is replicating the same shot multiple times in a row using sight picture, trigger squeeze, etc etc resulting in a shot group of said size.
The Rem 700 is the standard in the industry. It’s what every other bolt rifle is compared to. Which is why military rifles like the M24 and M40 were influenced by its design. But it does not necessarily mean the 700 is the best bolt rifle out there. I personally own a 700 LTR (light tactical rifle) chambered in .308" which is modded a bit from a standard 700 and its accuracy is unreal.
:word: If I have a good pair of glasses on I can see it fine but without it’s the same blob in the same area over and over still. My right eye is still pretty good without glasses.
I’ve been looking at this exact one among a few other 700’s for a bit. I’ve got enough scope time with an M24 which is why I’m leaning this way.
