not to go too far off topic…but I’ve been looking into buying new optics for the 700 LTR. I want something more tactical rather than the hunting oriented optics I have now. What would you recommend? I am leaning towards the IOR 2.5-10 x 42 30mm with the MP-8 reticule. They are pretty cheap for a durable scope with Schott glass.
My dad borrowed a remington model 700 in .243 froma friend of his. I was getting better accuracy out of a Marlin lever action 30-30 @ 100 yards. It is a nice gun, dont get me wrong, but I had expected the groupings to be a little tighter. I have VERY high standards when it comes to accuracy though. While some people are happy shooting say a 3" group at 100 yards (for example), I am damn disapointed if I cant get at least a 1", if not better.
If I’m getting a .308 It wouldn’t be an ar-10 or bolt action.
It’d be an M1a. or M1a Socom 16 haha.
I own an M1A too…very reliable gun and a blast to shoot. But if you get one don’t buy the standard with its flimsy synthetic stock.
If I were to get a rifle for nothing other that accuracy, I would go bolt action. The bolt holds the round more firmly in place, and is proven time and time again to be more accurate, especialy for high powered rifles. Not by any means knocking the M1 by any means, as they are incredible rifles.
M1A’s are sexy as hell with walnut stocks
PM store info, and if you can ship to ffl in texas.
I’m not to familiar with many scopes but, stay away from adjustable magnification scopes. the best shooters in the US do NOT use them. They are harder to get used to and use.
You’re using a bolt action, with that in mind tactical for that is something that you can see good with a good reticle in it. Something that will either let you kentucky windage after you’ve zeroed to your desired distance … something in the average of what you’ll be shooting.
Keep in mind if you plan on shooting ling distances with this 1K approx you should buy one lard batch of good match grade ammo as different mixes will ever so slightly vary. You need to zero to that power mix. then zero to the conditions for that day but as weather conditions change so will the zero.
There are TONS of factors a shooter has to consider when shooting at distance. This is why it helps to have a trained spotter who can see bullet trails (read bullet trails like in the matrix do exist and are used by shooters).
Please explain why vari-power are a bad thing?
True many shooters on long distance teams use fixed power, but then again, they are suited so the 10 ring on the target fills the objective perfectly, they don’t really use the cross hairs like you would in other situations.
There are just as many people using adjustable power scopes, as not. Usually rules are what keep people from using a fixed power scope.
When it comes to a scope, it should cost at least 75 percent of what the gun its going on. There is a HUGE difference between good glass and cheap glass. If you just wana shoot cans and make noise, then anything with magnification and hairs will do. If you want to adjust it, have it make its proper movements, and return to a zero with no jumping or sticking of the hairs, it will cost you a good bit of money. The standard is set by Leupold, and everyone from the us military to the best shooters use them.
Yea there is night force, nikon, burris… all make good stuff, but the pros in every industry turn to Leupold for many reasons. The best being the pro shop that they have. Leupold will modify any of their scopes to pretty much whatever you need. It makes for a great option for upgrades down the road.
I personally love my rock river arms AR platforms. I just bought a spikes tactical upper in 22lr for cheap practice and indoor shooting. I really am happy with the quality of both companies so far. Rock river makes very tight, accurate rifles.
There’s too much going on in this thread so i’ll say these things…
I just got one of those IOR Valdada scopes in for a guy, 3-18x42. Sick scope for sure.
I can get you AR’s under $1000 all day long. Probably could put together a nice spikes for around 950. For about $1250, I’m building two sick YHM models for customers.
As far as those DPMS LR-308, I just ordered one for a customer, and the price was $1099. They are out 4-5 months.
We do $20 transfers for nyfirearms.com members. We have lots of people come from buffalo to do their transfers.
That is all.
Opinions on the M14. Only rifle i’ve gotten my hands on. Only shot it a select few times in the military with exceptional groupings.
Colt has a rep for building reliable rifles, not accurate rifles. Don’t be a pony rider.
If you have $1000 to spend I would suggest building a gun. Buy an assembled upper… if you want the cats ass then go with a Bravo Company upper. If you want good and affordable then a DSA upper with the Nitride Treatment is the way to go. I would also suggest the DSA bolt a carrier group.
CMMG makes a nice lower with their trigger group already installed. It’s a little more than the average, but their trigger groups aren’t shit.
For those suggesting AR-10. Meh… Unless you are a long range shooter, and I am sure most aren’t (the longest range in Buffalo is 200 yards) or plan to hunt with it, its over kill and expensive to run. Even if you reload it will cost more to reload 7.62 nato than it would to buy brass 5.56. Then if you don’t reload you can sell your brass to guys like me
Oh and as for the SBR… lol, not in NY
You guys can’t have Class III guns.
Stick with a 16, or a 14.5 with a 2" compensator/suppressor (permanently attached) to keep it legal.
