To make it clear, I don’t have an art degree, I didn’t go to art school, and I don’t really agree with going to school for FINE arts. Fine arts degrees are pretty useless. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way…
Going to school for graphic / Web design isn’t always a bad thing. If you have some talent, but don’t know how to control a brush / pen / pencil / crayon or use a design application as well as you’d like, school can be a relatively good way to force yourself to practice.
Having never gone, I can’t imagine they can train people to become creative. So maybe that’s what you guys are getting confused about. You can train people how to use the tools properly, but training someone to be creative is debatable.
Also, “art” doesn’t always mean paintings. I’m an “artist,” but what I get paid for wouldn’t really be called “selling art.”
hahahah i think we all are with you on that
:party2:
although the main thing i think about with people going to school for art is becoming anyone that does like logos, signs, billboards. lol then there are those that create fliers, posters, banners, cards.
then the ones that think they will make a killing off of the pictures they paint/draw which, when i move and decorate my house i will probably use pictures i find for like $5. lol i bet who ever makes those pictures are making a killing. hahahaha :cky:
people who go to school for fine art work in museums, galleries, universities etc.
If they focus on specific forms of art they can be appraisers, curators, historians, brokers of fine art, consultants in purchasing, storing, valuation, transport etc.
Fine art (music, paintings, writing, sculpture, architecture, etc) is a multi-billion dollar industry that really only caters to the super wealthy…
None of us are cultured enough to appreciate it or have in-roads… this is a WNY forum remember?
I’m sure people in the field of fine art think it’s just as silly to go to racing schools… what are they going to do for a living? be a race car driver?.. pfff…
While it’s true that you can make a ton of money in the arts, most people go to school for it, and end up doing something completely different, or working as an art teacher.
Either way, art majors are typically stuck up D-bags. Not that engineers have a great rep…
meh, i realise where newman is coming from, but it’s still not that cut and dry.
i know lots of people who took decent programs who are still total fuckheads… also know dudes who dropped out of college, went into cardboard sales are are making 6 figures at the age of 23.
I would say it is all what you make of it. I have a friend who graduated from UB with her art degree and wanted to do Fashion Photography… she is in London right now working for a designer making about 1500 a week(pounds). She worked hard in school and made sure she got her name out there so that people saw her hard work.
Now I know the idiot girls you are talking about and I just laugh at them
My sister graduated from Canisius with an Art History degree.
Unless you teach, its pretty much useless. She doesn’t want to teach Art History around here, but instead she is going to Taiwan to teach English. I don’t get it.
and let me state that there is a huge difference between commercial art and fine art. Not much is to be had in the realm of fine art… but commercial art such as graphic design can be rather lucrative fields…
You need to become a bit more educated about art schools then. I know where you’re coming from with that comment, as I heard it before when I made the decision to go to art school…but like any field, you’re going to see those who have succeeded and those who are struggling. I saw both in my 100K education, but can say with confidence that a majority of my graduating class are doing very well in their field. As said before, it’s all about the individual and the knowledge of the industry that they take with them after graduation that will determine their success.
