The wife and I have been looking at a HUD foreclosure that currently has asbestos siding on it. I’m not to familiar with what to do with type of siding. From what I’ve been reading, its better to install replacement siding over the asbestos. Can anyone give me a ball park idea on what I would be looking at on replacing this?
I think you need to get the “replace” idea out of your head, and think about siding over it. Google asbesto siding removal… and you’ll see how it can get costly… even just finding a place to dump it.
That’s what he said orginally, install replacement siding.
And that is what I would do. Asbestos is a pain to 1) remove and 2) find someone to haul and dump.
I agree with everyone else. When we were looking at buying a house a few months ago (sale fell through thank god) we noticed that the flooring in the basement was asbestos tile. I figured it would just be something I could break up and have someone haul it away and that I would just need to have a cheap mask and gloves. I did some research and it turns out you need to have professionals come out and wear the equivalent of a haz-mat suit and the tile needs to be disposed of in special bags/boxes and it would get VERY expensive since it is much more than 1 days work. The whole areas would need to be sealed off from the rest of the house, so I can’t imagine what they would expect you to do when removing siding so that you don’t release excess asbestos into the air. I had decided that it would be easier to just tile over top of the asbestos and be done with it. Luckily, we didn’t buy that house and found another that is in much better condition.
I did ceramic tile over an asbestos tile floor, it worked out well. As far as the siding goes, i believe it is “non fryable”, meaning it makes no dust. But it would be hard to find somewhere to dump it.
