autocad crashed my computer?

so last night I installed and successfully ran AutoCAD 2010 for an hour or so. I remember when I first started the program it said it had changed my video card settings to optimize autocad.

I normally dont shut off my computer, I just close the lid and it locks the computer. It has been fine for the year I have it.

I also downloaded Inventor 2010,started the installation program and closed the lid before I went to bed.

Today when I got up it started having problems. (details are getting fuzzy here, it was early this morning before class)… pretty sure I opened the lid and shit idk what happened. regardless I ended up having to hold down the power button to restart the computer. when it started back up it asked me to re-open the last session of ff I had. I clicked ok and it froze again.

later I get home and have to hard restart it again. the desktop loads fine and the computer appears to be running ok until i go to click on something. then the screen goes to a translucent gray and freezes.

I hard restarted and while it was booting it strongly suggested that I run some sort of disk check, for bad files maybe? regardless it did that fine.

computer restarted and did the same freeze deal

I hard restart again, this time going into safe mode. all seems ok. ff works fine. AIM auto loaded (it didnt before when it would freeze). so I restarted back into normal mode and it did the same thing.

cliffs:
I think CAD did something to the video card, but idk why as it worked fine all last night. The only things that changed is I installed autocad, downloaded but only started to install inventor. I figured maybe I filled up the hd, but when it was in safe mode i checked and it was at 66mb/99mb. computer is the base model dell inspiron 1525. vista sp1

any thoughts?

I think I am going to take all my docs/pictures/music and try to put it onto a cd while in safe mode tonight (is that even possible?) just incase…

was this a legit version of autocad?? or did you get a torrent with a cracked .exe that potentially infected your computer with something?

get use to it, that is any autodesk product, start with a fresh windows install and keep all important stuff on an external HD.

EDIT: What type of video card, if it is onboard it is probably not compatible with Inventor or any true 3D software really

check the event log

whatever is ‘stock’ on a dell inspiron 1525 from last year. the thing that I dont understand is how it ran perfect last night. neither of the programs were open when the problems started.

can you explain how/where to find it?

Autocad optimizes settings for 3D drafting as well as rendering, find out what card you have. It ends up using too much ram to run the graphics in the program that it can’t use that anywhere else. I would recommend a minimum of a 512 card

fml, I dont know what anything in the event logger means. my computer is running perfect in safe mode.

it wont let me run the ‘back up and restore center’ though.

and I cant find anything about where/what cad would have changed in regards to the video card to put it back…

I have 2 gig of ram… and the processor is Intel Celeron CPU 560 @ 2.13 GHz.

Start >> Right click my computer >> Manage >> Event Viewer >> Application

That celeron processor will kill you.

VIDEO CARD!..

EDIT: But ya that celeron is not helping you, nor is trying to run it on a bare bones laptop

it wont tell me the video card name while in safe mode afaik…

I’m guessing it’s a standard low end nvidia/ati mobile card that can barely run solitaire.

Try going in and changing the Performance options in Vista
Control Panel >> System >> Advanced System Settings >> Performance >> Select “Adjust for best performance”

You have an intel celeron processor on a laptop with vista…you are already behind before you even startup AutoCAD…

<EDIT>
Go To Control Panel > System > Device Manager and open up Display Adapters…should list your GPU

what do I do to fix the problem? (besides a new computer.)

well it’s integrated graphics, so, along with all the other hardware factors working against you, the only real option is to get a new computer.

so in the interim I stay in safe mode? lol

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. fml

AutoCAD is one of those programs you almost have to have a beefy desktop to run. Same with Photoshop.

Do a clean install of windows, and don’t install Inventor on you laptop…

My lap top has a 2.4ghz quad core, 8gb of ram to use REVIT (if I boot into vista) if I am using AutoCad MEP I have to boot into XP though

Go into safe mode, device manager, display adapters, and delete anything in there. Reboot and windows will reinstall your video card drivers, hopefully unfucking what ever Inventor fucked up.

If it’s working find out if there is a way to install Inventor without it “optimizing” your display settings (I’m sure there is).

Integrated graphics + celeron = no autocad for you
