Computer freezing issues...

Alright, I figured I’d post here and then go google shit up later to see if I can figure this out. Lately (seems like after I installed the new HDD but I can’t remember if it happened before that or not) my computer tends to freeze completely. I seriously don’t think it is a heat issue.

P4 2.8
x760 Pro AGP vid card
2 sticks of 512MB ULT30215 ram
WD 320 GB HDD (newest addition)
Maxtor 80GB HDD (never any problems)
BenQ dvd burner
Antec SmartPower 500W power supply

If anyone has any ideas I’m up for listening. It’s starting to piss me off.

What version of windows? Have you installed any new programs or drivers? When did you notice this beggining to happen?

You checked your heatsink/fan to make sure that its not full of dust? You “seriously dont think its a heat issue” but what makes you think so?

If its not, google memtest and grab a floppy. Go and get memtest+ and get it onto a floppy and restart and boot off of it. It could be bad memory…

If it was an over heating issue, the system would power itself down. Could be bad memory or a dimm failing. It happened to me before I bought new memory for my system.

If it is then it’s wierd because I’ve had the memory in for quite some time. Having it sit here and just freeze all of a sudden is odd. I should blow out the heatsink. I havn’t checked it out latly… might not be able to make enough heat escape if there is dust in that fan. Thanks for the help so far… I’ll keep anyone updated.

if it ain’t beeping, it isn’t overheating.

less porn = more gooder

Exactly what I was thinking. I’m going to go try that MEMtest thing now… god I hope a stick of memory isn’t crapped out…

EDIT Damnit that means I have to re-hook up my floppy drive… lol. grrr

check Event Viewer. See if it is reporting any errors. If so, post up what they are.

Eh, already looked. Didn’t see anything in there.

What does beeping have to do with anything? That only works if it is set in the BIOS, if it has that option. A lot of computers will overheat and just shut off. They have no warnings.

I told you once, and I guess I have to tell you again for some reason. Run Memtest. On the website is a floppy and an ISO. Just burn the image to a CD if you dont want to attach your floppy. Just make sure you set bios to boot floppy and/or CD-ROM before Hard drive before booting with memtest in.

computer troubleshooting has nothign to do with making assumptions quite readily “I seriously don’t think it is a heat issue.” But, you didnt even check the heatsink/fan! So, what made you think it wasnt a heat issue???

OK, someone else help him out. I’m done. He’ll never find the answer if he doesnt do the basic troubleshooting, and keeps making stuff up.

You’re an idiot. I never said I wasn’t going to run the memtest. All I said I had to do is hook the floppy up to do so. Geesh. Also, I’m not making shit up, I checked the heat sink, I checked alot of shit believe it or not. I wasn’t assuming shit on anything I said. I check things before I say that it’s not that causing the issue.

Ok, to anyone else other than this freak… I started up the memtest and had to leave for like 8 hours. I didn’t realize it just kept running over and over, kind of assumed it just ran once and stopped. Either way it ran about 29 times or some crazy number like that :-P. Go figure I come home, it’s running great (no failures) and the computer isn’t frozen… lol.

No idea… but at least I can check Memory off my list.

your sig is too big :stuck_out_tongue:

and did you put in the fan yet?

There… I cut the sig down.

Fan’s not in yet. Will be soon. I’m lazy… lol. Still trying to figure out the freezing thing.

Ok… I looked at the event log again.

Has anyone ever seen this?

Damn photobucket shrinking my pictures!! here’s what it says:
The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

Damnit if my new HDD is doing this… I’ll be so pissed…

EDIT My HDD with windows on it is in location 0 and my new HDD is in location 1.

Does anyone think this looks to be my “older” HDD then?

that is your old hd…

partition your 320gig… move your important files to the 2nd partition on that drive.
then install windows etc on the primary partition … (after removing the old drive and making the new one master of course…)

That’s what I thought. I already ave a bunch of crap (music, and more…) on my 320… I have a couple extra HDD’s sitting around. I could just use one of those for the OS.

you could always try spinrite at level 5, and see how bad the drive is. It may be able to re-allocate the bad sectors, and stop the freezing and even make the drive useable.

Cool, I’ll check it out. Never heard of that program before. I’ll look for the download tonight.

Oh, and the drive does work… but hopefully it quits the freezing. That would be nice… lol.

dying is dying… and old drives are usually dying as well.
sector repair (if that’s the ONLY issue) is only a temporary fix
