Azenis RT-615 question

Have you run them on a heavier high HP car? Know anyone who has? Opinions?

I went through 2 sets of them on my Fiero autocrossing constantly and hitting one track day and LOVED them. One of those really bored days at work I was doing some searching and I remember reading a couple posts somewhere about them not working well with heavier high HP cars. My GTO has almost 3 times the HP of the Fiero, and about a 1000lbs more weight, so I’m a little worried about the 615s.

I haven’t run them personally, but I know of a few EVOs that have run them and they are just fine. I don’t think the GTO is that much heavier than the EVO.

You just need to be real dillegent (sp?) about rotating the tires. I can’t recall any issues with 615s and heavy cars as far as auto-x was concerned.

24 out of the top 30 of the STU cars used Yokohamas. The top 18 positions were ALL on Yoks…

The highest placing Falken was 21st.

So what does that tell you?

:word: so since you are the leet f-bod (a car very similar to the GTO) driver what tires do you recommend for Jason, or did you only post in this thread to bash auto-X?

have you ever ran autoX or a road course? tires are everything.

I bought a set of 615’s for my turbo SHO. I think that falls intoy the catagory of heavy and high HP. but unfortunetly for you I only got to drive them in cold weather. in the 20 deg range they would spin a tad from a 25mph brake boost and then about 1/2 way through first they would hook and slam me in my seat. cornering is kick ass also but it was really cold so I didn’t get to run them to their limits. + I have less the 500 miles on thme so I may not be so much help. if you want ot wait a couple months I could inform you better about them.

they are cheap though so thats a +

IF you are clueless and don’t have something useful to say, just stay on the sidelines.

That the Yokohama would appear to be the fastest street tire for that class. But that link doesn’t say which Yokohama tire was in use. From what I have seen, the Falken tires tend to be cheaper than most Yoks in its class. Since Jay never said how serious he was about competition as far as the tires use, not sure what mentioning Yok’s does to answer his question.

He seemed to just be more worried about the life of the 615 over time with regards to his fat pig of a car, and not so much raw times on a tarmac pad. Maybe the tires will do double duty because he doesn’t want to swap tires at events this year? Jay? Elaborate? What are you looking for exactly?

I would assume the Advan Neova since it is their max performance tire:

But they are also the most expensive tire in the test.

If you aren’t splitting hairs I see nothing wrong with the RT-615, maybe bring a spray bottle with you to cool them down as they like to get hot…

lol at fat pig of a car.

Yeah, I should have been more clear. I don’t care if I give up 10 seconds on an autocross course this year. While I could make the GTO competitive for autocross, at least locally, I won’t be doing it this year. So autocross is just going to be going out and having some fun.

Basically I want something to put on when I remove the snows that I can hit a few autocrosses with, really enjoy on the street, and won’t fall apart if I find the time to hit a track day. The car came with “high performance all seasons” that suck at everything, and I’ve been told after a couple laps at a track day they will start chunking. Hell, I’ve seen the motortrend review of the goat where they did chunk the same tires I have after about 3 laps.

I came from the Bridgestone RE070’s (sti oem) and the RT615’s needed an extra 3-4 psi to match the response of the 070’s, while losing footprint at the same time.

I think next version of azenis will have stiffer sidewalls. These tires could really benefit from that adjustment.

(Yeah, I’d run Neova’s if money wasn’t an object, but the price is right on the azenis)

Stiffer sidewalls… you mean they’re bringing back the RT215?

Anyway, given the price, worst case, you burn through a couple of sets of RT615s, and not spend much more than what you’d spend on a single set of Yokos.

bah, screw the street tires, you can get 275/40 17s Hoosier A3S05s for the same price as the RT-615.

or 275/40 17 Z211s for a little bit more…

same rolling diameter as 245/45 17s

and stock rims are $300 on ebay…

As much as I’d like to jump to r-comps I just can’t do it this season. The baby funds have really cut into the racing funds. Hell, I may end up back on the shitty dunlops come spring.

Besides, with the extra grip I’d really need some extra shocks to keep the fat pig from rolling over like a whale.
