kumo ecsta mx vs azenis RT-615

need new tires and narrowed it down to these 2 i guess. i had azenis on my last car and had no complaints but how do the kumo ecsta’s compare to them?

i’d also consider the hankook rs2. discounttiredirect.com. everyone will have a tire they love and hate, i’d get whats cheaper. when i did this same research last year, fairgentleman z had a great link, so i’d search here. i think i found the most negatives for the kuhmo. so the rt-615 was out for me since it wasn’t available in my size. thus i went with the rs2 and love them.

Jeremy probably linked www.edgeracing.com.

The 615 is a VERY popular autocross tire in the street tire classes, so that should tell you something. I ran a set on that Fiero I used to autocross all the time and loved them. Some people complain about road noise but I never noticed it. Of course, and 86 Fiero doesn’t exactly have Lexus like sound insulation at 80mph so it might just be I couldn’t hear the tires over the other noises. It usually ranks high in tests at places like grassroots motorsports.

The MX on the other hand ranked last in grassroots motorsports test of 5 tires, the same test the 615 won. It also did poorly on a test Car and Driver did.

what size do you need?

i have brand new 225/45/17 hankook R-comps i have to sell.

also have some rt-615’s with not much left on them at Josh’s that i cant bring over…

i have MX’s on my car now, they are pretty good, i thought the 215’s had more grip when i wore those a couple years back.

sounds good. my only gripe about the azenis is their life cause im going to be doing a lot of auto-xing and track time this year

kinda leaning toward 225/45/17 but i have to verify that will fit without fender rolling

+1

i got them, and don’t anticipate ever going with anything else unless…at least not going with anything else that’s currently in production…

I loved the 615’s. BUT unless the car they are on isn’t going to be an every day car, you will want something with longer life. So either get a spare set of rims, or go with something cheaper that has a longer life. Mine lasted 1.5 seasons.

Unless you have the cash to spend of course.

ive run both tires and as far as grip goes the azenis win hands down. they also have a much stiffer side wall. the MX’s were a little better in wet conditions and had a bit better tread wear. but if i were to buy a set of tires, i would definatly be getting another set of azenis.

I withdraw all my previous tire recommendations

Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1

they have a $50 rebate right now:

discount tire has some more sizes, new tire this year so I would assume more sizes to follow.

they dont have the size i want though

forget the MX’s they arent really on the same playing field, theyre 220 treadwear. they arent a bad tire for the street, but the Azenis and RS-2’s are the head to head competition. I am thinking about getting Azenis for the Honda track car when i burn out my RS-2’s. I love them but id like to see what all the fuss is with the Azenis. Note: my hankooks are 200treadwear but i swear they grip and wear like 180s… (hankook is lighter and has better wet grip than azenis)

Yes I am aware of that, if you read what you quoted me saying…

I have already addressed that.

However, if you use the tire calculator provided by miata.net :
Tire size calculator

You will see that the available tire size is 3.4% smaller, giving a shorter gear and probably a slightly shorter (stiffer) sidewall.

Deviate from the OE manufacture tire and wheel sizes at your own risk.

i know u addressed that but i was just saying

The dunlop is getting some very good feedback on the autox forums.

These tires are all very similar but there are tradeoffs to consider with price, grip, wear, etc. in sorting out their small differences.

The MX, azenis and hankooks are all at the lower end of prices. Of these I would say the azenis has the most grip so that would be my choice.

Then Dunlops are a bit more and then you get into the current tires to have among the street tire autocrossers, the Bridgestone re01r and yokohoma advan neova.

There is another new tire from toyo that I will likely run for autox this season but there are only limited sizes available right now.
