Backing up Dvd's

Ok, I know this has been discussed many times but I also know there are always new programs coming out. I want to backup up my Dvd’s so I can share them across my network. What is a good program(preferably free) to use? I will be using a Roku, and the Fios app as well, if that matters at all.

bump any suggestions? I did search but didnt find much of anything.

I used to use dvdfab back when I was making copies of netflix dvd’s. It used to be an all in one solution that would copy DVD to DVD-R or let your rip them to various computer playable file formats. Now it looks like they’ve broken the software into multiple pieces to force you to buy multiple pieces of software. For what you’d want to do you’d want DVDFab DVD Ripper.

I haven’t used this in a long time since now I generally just download everything in MKV format, but it used to be pretty rock solid software. They’d update all the time to keep ahead of the latest anti-piracy techniques studios would put on media. Looks like there’s a free trial available. If you’re going to use it a lot it’s probably worth paying for just for the access to quick updates.

There’s also the free Handbrake software, but it has nothing to bypass security enabled DVD’s.

Great thank you.

If you want to a make a loseless copy of the DVD in a container format, then use makemkv http://makemkv.com/, this is free software unlike DVDfab and works for DVD and Bluray and can circumvent most anti-piracy measures.

If you want to transcode them into another format to save space using something like the H.264 mpeg4 codec, then Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/ is one the best there is. It is also free, also it has nice presets for different devices.

Honestly in this day in age with all the different free tools available I really see no point in paying for DVDfab.

Handbrake won’t bypass copyright protected disks though will it?

It can circumvent somethings, but for what it can’t, use makemkv to get a copy only your computer, then Handbrake to transcode.

^ That’s a lot of steps and putzing around compared to the one click solution of dvdfab.

Seriously it’s 3 clicks tops, and its free.

Yeah, except between each of those clicks is a long wait while a big file is re-encoded.

Plus, DVDFab is kinda free too:
