Seriously.
I know that if you own a boat you should be familiar with the waters you travel in…but it is quite clear that they need to have this area marked.
Yeah, for as much as the coast guard spends each year responding to distress calls from people plowing into it you’d think they’d just throw a couple markers on it in the spring and pull them out in the fall.
agreed, needs to be marked
I never truly appreciated this thing until a couple years ago when we had east winds for like a week and all the water got blown toward Ohio. You could actually see just a mass of rocks sticking out of the water. Definitely needs marking.
Found a pic.
so many people have destroyed their outdrives there, but still been able to make it back to shore.
I’ve never tried to shoot the emerald channel and i don’t’ plan to try.
i saw this happening yesterday coming home from taking the NYS co exam. i thought that boat looked REALLY low in the ass end
the dumbass coast guard guy was saying know your waters before going out. Go mark the fucking thing instead of saying dumb shit in a news interview.
The problem with marking it is the responsibility is on the boater to know the water. If they mark bird island there are still 1000’s of other shoals along the shores of the lake that aren’t marked.
Want to see danger… Try boating in the Thousand
Islands. If there are 1000 above the water there are another 1000 just below it. You can be in marked channel with 50’ depth and see a rock sitting 1" above the surface not 3 feet from the channel.
Buy a fucking map for 12 bucks, or get a gps with depth graphics.
Dumb ass boaters spend 50g on a boat but can’t spend 600 on a very nice gps to protect it, or learn how to read a map.
I just laugh if your that dumb.
I know a few people who are just starting to boat who have his this and really ruined their motor but didn’t know anyone sunk from hitting it.
I agree tho, if you are paying that much for a boat, buy a damn gps and know where you are.
I just drove by this today and was wondering if they halfway recovered the last one or something or if it had claimed another! I guess this answers my question.
It’s like me flying without maps and hitting a hill and then bitching that the FAA should put lights on top of it so i don’t do that.
yeah…it’s just like that…
gps is always a good idea, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think the coast guard should be holding hands out there, however, a trouble spot like this in a heavy traffic area should be marked.
Awesome. There already is a channel marked in the River that will take you safely past all the rocks…so, technically it is marked, just indirectly. If you stay between the buoys, you won’t hit shit, end of story. If you don’t know what buoys are for, and didn’t bother to buy a chart (hell, you can view them for free online) and run your boat up on the rocks, you got what you deserved.
I’ve got to agree with you there. The channels ARE marked for a reason. I’ve seen plenty of marked channels with shole markers just outside though. Coming from boating in inland waters on the coast, I’ve learned to highly respect channel markers and shallow waters. A 4 foot tide drop makes a hell of a difference out there and I’ve pushed my boat out of my share of muddy, ankle deep waters. HOWEVER, there is a huge difference between a sandy bottom and a rocky one. I maintain that this should be marked.
But still, the Coast Guard is spending a ton of money on these rescues. Eventual they will cave-in and mark it.
