As anyone here had any problems with jump starting your BMWs? My buddy has a beamer he valeted, and when he came out, his battery was dead. When they tried jumping it, his car started acting wacking and threw some kind of codes and I think the traction control light stayed on. He had to take it the BMW to reset some kind of security modules. Then on another instance, his father borrowed it, and when he came back his battery was dead again. He jumped it and of course it again had problems and needs to go to bmw to be reset. Except this time I think it needs to be towed. Now over the weekend I heard of a newer 335 that needed to get jumped and is throwing all sorts of lights and won’t start but needs to be taken to BMW to have the security module reset. Are these freak accidents or whats up with jump starting a BMW?
BMW’s are very temperamental when it comes to their batteries. I was reading that on newer BMW’s (e9x’s) you have to go to the dealer to change your battery because they have to reset the computer for the new battery, or else your electronics will be fuckedd.
Is he using the jumping posts under the hood or the battery in the trunk?
Honestly, it just sounds like he needs a new battery and that is causing most of the issues.
The better question is, what keeps draining his battery? Try fixing the problem before thinking of half ass fixes.
Someone people buy cars…some people buy cars they can afford.
I had to jump my m3 a couple of times because of a weak battery one winter…
I didnt have any problems… every once and a while it would go retarded and throw a DSC and EML light, but if you turned off the car and turned it back on all would be gone…
I usually jumped it via the battery in the trunk because most of the time my car was pulled INTO a spot at my apartment and i coulldnt jump it from the posts…
But i jump my car with positive on the terminal and the negative on a chassis ground, not on the battery itself…
My e36 battery used to go dead, and I’d have to jump it. Never got any codes or anything from it.
Fix whats draining it…
On my buddies beamer he never had a problem with it. If you read, both instances were after someone else drove it. 1. at a valet 2. after his father took it.
The 335 is a whole different vehicle that it happened to over the weekend. All instances the car was jumped using the terminals under the hood.
Whats the relevance of this?
there is something else going on, 99% of the car is automated for him
I got my auto transmission warning light to come on went my speed limiter limited me to 140 yesterday. Turned off after I restarted my car.
Chassis ground loops right back into the battery
Never heard of this or had it happen and mine still has the original battery from 00’ lol.
True, but the significance of connecting the last - jumper cable to the engine block or chassis somewhere instead of the battery is to avoid creating a spark at the battery and risking a battery explosion. Remember, Lead Acid batteries give off oxygen and hydrogen gas as a by product, thats why they have vents.
DING DING!!
Thank you
