Pretty much.
Mike, what are your thoughts on the E60 535? I was hoping you would chime in here.

what about doing something like an allroad? grab it in stick.
why not subaru/nissan? Something against the jap brands?
Allroad crosses my mind sometimes. The wife would prefer stick as well. I think Im put off by having to replace two turbos when the wg flappers fall off the actuator. IDK 2.7T scares me sometimes.

Right. I dont dig em, at all. Id rather work on a German car than drive a “reliable”, boring, jap car.
Dan
They’re certainly not boring at all, but to each their own.
There are exceptions to every rule. But yes, to each their own.
Bottom line, I more than likely (95% confidence) wont buy a jap car.

I would be weary of owning an N54 equipped vehicle outside of warranty. Not every engine has problems, but I replaced a fair share of turbos, tons of injectors, and tons of high pressure fuel pumps, when I worked for BMW. Granted the pumps have an extended warranty on certain years, as well as injectors on some.
I also saw a couple cases of carbon buildup on the valves causing misfires.
Well, if you have an open mind, check out the FX35/45.
I don’t know i don’t see that many turbo failures on the 2.7t, my allroad had 225k on oem turbos, my current a6 has 198k oem turbos, justins old a6 had 191k stock turbos (and running a stage2 MTM tune). if you can leave well enough alone the 2.7t is an amazing motor. I would take the concern of the turbo over the failing CCV system, the long runner actuating device failer, and much more i see in the bmw’s
Id be looking at something 06 ish, which would be N52. How does that change things?

Interesting. This would remain stock tuned. Looks like they can be had for a decent price with less than 70k miles… hmm
I need to find one locally to look at. (damn that two tone leather is pretty awful)
Dan
can always get the allroad with the 4.2 if you’re worried about turbos?
Could. But they seem even harder to find and I think they were only avail auto.
ya 4.2 only auto. and the 2 tone isnt that bad in person looks horrible in pictures though… get a black on black 6 speed… and i will steal it out of your drive in the middle of the night.
Ill never own another black vehicle. If I do get one its going to be silver or grey. Sure its boring, but our silver A4 always looks clean.
Dan
I’ve been driving around this one lately and like it a lot
haven’t really had any snow to test out though
it’s a 4.2, I think a 2.7t would be my personal preference
You 60s are great cars. However the first model year interior is a complete piece of shit. The 07+ got nicer. The 2010+ are leaps and bounds above. If you get a 35 you need to make sure it has the extra oil cooler or especially if you’re going to do upgrades. Although I cannot remember what years for some reason got the oil cooler dropped. Out of warranty you’re Gonna be doing fuel pumps and waste gate actuators. I have a friend that has an n54 out of warranty and it’s still been mostly trouble-free except for those two issues
Just turned 175k miles…(on stock, original air springs, no less)
New injectors, and another 3-4 lbs. of boost coming soon.

As soon as I see it, I stop reading and move on
Unfortunately a 10+ E60 is going to be way over budget.
I think Im leaning more towards the Allroad. According to the specs it has the most rear leg room of any of the options Ive looked at (1-2" more, including the X3 and X5). This was one of our main reasons for looking for something bigger, more passenger room. Im used to working on the VAG platform, have my own vagcom etc. Also it looks like you can pick up a pretty damn nice Allroad for fairly cheap.
The only thing other than turbos (which it sounds like most people have damn good luck with on the Allroad) is the air ride. In the 5mins of reasearch I did last night it looks like worst case you can make a set of A6 coilovers bolt in with some minor drilling.
This is sort of turning into an Allroad thread, but to Jason - what else is there specifically to look out for with these Allroads?
Dan
Blown air suspension from people lifting it without putting it into lift mode
e46 wag00ns with sportpackage & mtech bumpers
