Boxing, anyone?

we were playing basketball once, and i faked a shot and he was flyin through the air and swatted…air. i then made the shot and he was in pain pain pain

I boxed with the UB club and loved it. Training will definitely kick your ass. Dean (coach) was awesome, and used to work through Summit gym below Fitness Factory when he wasn’t working with UB. When you come back PM me and I’ll dig out his information. In my opinion he has a talent and love for teaching the sport, and it was evident when we went undefeated at just about every competition. He also doesn’t beat the snot out of new people until they are capable. Some gyms start you out by teaching you how to take a beating. Man, you are making me think about getting back into it!

good stuff here, good stuff  Micah, I’ll PM you this weekend when I get more time to research - everyone else, thanks as well. Again, I’m quite a ways away - or else I’d take you up on your offers for local connections

ugh, after a week down with the flu (yeah, moved to NC to catch the fucking flu  - at least all my pants fit now  ), got a jump rope after going to dick’s for some new workout gloves without holes in them.

jumping rope KICKS YOUR ASS. def a completely new kind of cardio for me, and i could certainly use the improvement in coordination. been taking MSM for a week now, can def feel the difference in my shoulder joint/etc. looking forward to joining up with a local boxing club within a couple months at this rate.

thanks for all the helpful input so far. anything else i should be doing/focusing on, aside from strength training & cardio to get my endurance/lean muscle mass up?

EDIT: this helped a lot:

I hear you. I have been doing my own ‘training’ to get in better shape, and get cardio back, before signing up to train and box at a new gym…

I haven’t puked from working so hard since highschool.

I blame it on beer.

Run stairs, or bleachers. Not a stair master, but something that can be more explosive, like a stadium or arena. Also, I was always taught not to lift weights (upper body), but to do calisthenics instead. Something about fast twitch verses slow…

do a lot of stretching type excercises, the more flexible you become the better you’ll be able to bob & duck and also increase your reach.

We used to do crab walks across the floor, you basically lay on the floor on your stomach then stretch out with your left arm while tucking your right leg up and while keeping your stomach as close to the floor as possible but without touching, “walk” across the floor by stretching out and pulling yourself along. That probably doesn’t make sense, its hard to put into words how it looks.

Our final workout was a deadman’s hang using a towel to strenthen your hands. Put a towel over a chinup bar and do a pullup just holding onto the ends of towel and hang as long as possible.

I take Power Boxing at Terry’s workout Center on Hertel and they have a private boxing ring upstairs and it’s not very expensive to get lessons. The boxing class I take is a cardio thing but we learn alot of boxing moves in a fun way and you definitely get a good workout.

Sure…I think I have a price sheet at home. There are private lessons for sure…the only “boxing” class that I know of is the Power Boxing one I take…which is done to music(which makes it fun Micah)…Jezikatee1983 and I take the class. We love it.

oh. haha. in your class is there any actual “contact” :nono:

I dont know how many of the gyms are left around here. I used to box then kickbox for 5-6years. The gym I used to go to is gone, I remember some of the gyms we competed against were in West Seneca, Cheektowaga, ect. Its hard to find a good gym these days I dunno why…maybe i’m not into in so much, I dont look as much. I was recently into MMA and thats 10xs better than boxing. Boxing gets boring, you only use your hands. lol.

Oh, and in my opinion, no matter how much u train before you join a gym (that actually works your ass off) you’ll still be sore and want to never return again.

BUT, knowing how to jump rope is def. a plus. Jumprope is still one of the most funamental work out tools for boxing/kickboxing/muai thai, its right up there with the punching bag.

It’s a cardio thing…remember? I just think a combination of private lessons and the power boxing class would be a good mix.
