Breaking engine in on the dyno...

My other car is off the road and i just cant see registering it/insuring it and then just taking it off the road again for the winter after the dyno… The new motor/setup is installed, but since its going to be a high hp build and quite a bit of tuning might need to be done to the new ecu/map for this build to run correctly, Im thinking the first thing to be done is to take the car to the dyno and start breaking it in, then up the power on 93 oct/methanol, then go for broke with C16… Reccomendations? I had originally thought of breaking it in on the street with a street tune, then hitting up the dyno shortly after, but im thinking of skipping the street session(s) due to simplicity reasons… What do you guys think?

Think it is more trouble than it is worth if you aren’t talking about a carb’d engine. With EFI it would entail you taking your whole wiring harness, computer and fuel system to the dyno. In this case it is much easier to do it in the car, base tune, little street tune driveability then hit up the chassis dyno for a full WOT tuning

yeah, the engine would be running in car, im thinking of chassis dyno, but trailer the car to the dyno instead of driving it there and omit the street tuning… Sorry my explanation was confusing. BTW this is a high boost 4cyl efi engine. Honda, but not what youd expect

i broke mine in on the highway up to 7,000 rpms. runs like a top.

Guys, he’s saying he’s gonna trailer the car to a chassis dyno, but can’t break it on on the street because it won’t be reg’d… am i right?

keep in mind, you’re going to want to run the motor for a bit and then dump the oil before you go high boosting. So the street option isn’t bad, just be sure you’re tuning that damn thing as soon as you fire it and get the coolant circulating.

i recommend doing your initial startup at home and makeing sure nothing is leaking and get a good heat cycle on it varying rpms up and down while bleading to make sure no air pockets in cooling. then change motor oil while hot. replace oil/filter and head to the dyno. I recommend spina’s because there dyno is in the air and you can flush oil again after a couple hard pulls without unstrapping the car itself.

yes. Its just a big pain to register the car and pay all the stupid fees and get it insured just for a few weeks, i just want to get it broke in and tuned, then play with it next year when the weather is good.
