BSOD's like whoa. Help?

So my roommate just hooked up his computer at our new apt after it has been sitting for the last 3 months. He goes to start it up, XP runs fine for like 10 minutes, then bam, blue screen of death.
Every time thereafter he goes to turn it on, he gets a BSOD for “page fault in nonpaged area”, everyone’s favorite.
So I put his windows CD in to try and do a repair install or even a format, and every time it goes to boot off the CD, another BSOD, this time for “CDFS.sys”
The one time it actually booted properly it didn’t detect his copy of windows and gave “this partition is corrupted, setup cannot continue.”

My first inclination is that his hard drive took a shit, but would that give it problems even booting off a CD?

Overheating? Are all the fans in the case spinning? More specifically, the processor’s fan.

Also if everyting is clean and seems to be working properly as far as the fans let it crash and check temps in the BIOS, if that is good. Next step would be to run a memory test.
