So a friend and I have been talking about studying abroad for a few years now but because of cost, I have never been able to make it happen.
At first when my buddy brought up Budapest Hungary, I was like, “wtf is in Budapest?” but after doing some research, I found out that it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, has a thriving nightlife, and is located right in the smack dab center of Europe (which will make weekend travel to other European cities very easy via Europass)
The best part is, it is the cheapest city to study abroad in all of Europe with all of my credits transferring back to UB.
So,
What do you know?
Have you ever been there?
Do you know someone who has been there?
What am I in for?
If I do this it will either be Fall 09 or Spring 10
Meh, there are nicer countries, architecturally, but that is pretty bad ass. I want to visit Budapest someday.
I dont know anything about budapest, but I have had countless exchange students over the years, my brother has studied in both spain and argentina, my sister is in spain currently as well.
BTW I wouldn’t bother with Europass, unless all you’ll be doing is traveling. You will probably find it is cheaper to just buy rail tickets as you need them and take advantage of some of the low cost airlines. Especially, domestic only.
My sister’s boyfriend went to Hungary through Fredonia. I’ll ask him where he went exactly, and see if he will do a review for me. He loved it there, but that’s about as much as I know.
Its still gonna cost me a pretty penny, but seriously, you are only young once, and you only live once… I have already put the rest of my 20’s in debt so what is one more expensive venture.
I seriously would love this, as this is a major decision for me
A good friend of mine is from Hungary, he grew up 5 minutes outside of Budapest, he visits every year and every time he does I wanna go so bad. The people seem great, the atmosphere is amazing and you have the ability to travel throughout Europe if you wanted to. to studying abroad there. And Jt76 it’s Eastern European, but it’s far from what you think. It’s not like you’re staying in Serbia or Bosnia lol.
I spent a few days in Budapest last spring, I liked it alot, definatly not my favorite city in europe, but its up there. The parliment building and buildings in that area are awesome, there were some dirty parts of the city, but hey, every city has them. It was generally cheaper for a large city than most of western europe, the countryside is very pretty, and its not terribly far from other cities such as bratislava, belgrade, vienna. The bus system in that part of europe is DIRT cheap, and comftorable, student agency i believe was the name of the operator. Depending on what countries you are going to, eurail pass can be worth it, I bought one for the western countries, it is very, very convienient, and saves a ton of money when you show up last minute…any other questions, ask away
Well… How is the nightlife? The people? the food? The entertainment?
You say Europass for the western countries, but I thought the cost applied to most all Eu countries?
You have a guesstimate how many hours I would be from the major European cities (Rome, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, even London) I can obviously read and scale a map but I dont know what kind of transportation can get you there in what times… All I know is the Italian coast is only a 1.5 hour ferry ride.
This will be my first time in Europe so im afraid I do not know much
Im aware of where Hungary is on a map… its a former eastern bloc country, therefore “Eastern Europe”… im sure its nice, but if i was going to Europe, it wouldnt be there… and yes the Balkans have been a shithole even before WWI
And its far from my first choice but as I stated before its a cost thing.
I really wanted to do a semester in Europe but the cheapest I could find after tuition and living costs (and transportation even) was $15000 and that was bare bones in a shitty flat or hostel.
This will cost less than a third of that and like I also said before… we will be traveling to a different city every weekend anyways so it works out.
