Building a backyard ice rink. Who has done it

Finally have a big enough backyard to build a rink for the winter.

Who has done it. What are some good and bad things you have come across

u sure u dont need some sort of Permit  , but really look for the kits they work pretty good. we had one years ago when i was like 10. i dont rememeber much bad.

lol
I better not need a permit!

Yea, im kinda looking for something I can take apart in the spring.
Something like 2x6 or 2x8 with plastic down. no boards, nothing like that.

OOOOOOH WAIT A SEC…
with this whole sue happy america…JUST THINKING OUT THERE but if some kid comes into my yard, slips and cracks his dome on my ice…HAH could he sue me.

I only say this because kids in the area like to jump the fences

wonder if i need a permit for razor wire =P

Whenever I’ve had one is was just 2x4’s and a tarp, nothing crazy…

my buddys house people would always hop his fence… his mother put nails in every slat on the top and cut off the tops. never a kid in there yard again

We used to do it every year. Best words of wisdom= MAKE SURE the yard is somewhat level. We thought ours was somewhat level…turns out we had a difference of about 24 inches…that means 24-28inches of water in the low end. Took forever to freeze.

yea, ive done it with 2x4 and a big blue tarp from harbor freight…

the blue ice was kind of weird… if i had to do it again i would get the clear plastic sheeting to do it…

mine was “small” at ~ 20X40, it was basically just to prove i could do it …

i would suggest getting multiple hoes, get a splitter from harbor freight… it fills better and more even if you do it from 2-4 areas rather then one hose, so you dont need to go out there and move the hose around in the winter…

also i woudl suggest building a “zamboni” out of PVC

y not just hook up a hose to your hot water tank and mist the ice?

The PVC “resurfacer” is basically just that, but you pull it across the ice with a bunch of little holes in it to do that… works pretty well… misting the ice causes the ice to get “sandy” and grainy and the puck wont slide well… you need to put hot water directly on it in little streams

good point about it like sandpaper

I usually just took the snow blower into the back yard and made an oval or a square never used boards or anything. All the snow usually made some pretty good sized walls. Just haven’t been doing it in the past few years because the winters are not what they used to be.

yup

only could use it for a few days after it freezing, then thawing then finally freezing well enough that i could skate on it… after that i just kinda gave up :frowning:

If this turns out well… NYSpeed hockey tourny at OP’s house?

you better believe it!

sidenote…last fall we tore down our above-ground pool, but left the “hole” hoping it would freeze over winter…sure enough, with a lil effort it was definitely useable. skated on it randomly on many late nights to clear my head from school haha

amen.
